A chance to compare the 1992 Central Line Stock with that from 1962 which is approaching Woodford
station on the right with the RAIL ADHESION TRAIN on the 30th October 2009.

Now this is the only 1962 Central Line Silver Stock running on the London Underground. They were
withdrawn from service on the Central Line in 1995 but were operating on the Northern Line for a
a while after this. This one is used for laying down sandite on the track to improve grip during the
leaf fall season and is currently making runs on an almost daily basis. It was pictured at Buckhurst Hill
on the 28th October 2004.

DIGITAL PANIC set in when after picturing the train entering the station the camera decided
to turn itself off! First attempt to revive it failed. The second attempt succeeded but by
then time was running out so I then had to chase the the train with the telephoto...and this
was the result...phew! The place is Buckhurst Hill on the Central Line, the date 28th October 2004
and the train the one remaining 1962 stock in use on an engineering Sandite Special.

We were not expecting the returning Sandiite Special to come into the
centre road at Loughton so we were a little unprepared but just managed
this view of its arrival...something that wound the clock back nine years. The date was October
28th 2004.

The only 1962 Silver Central Line Stock still running was out again on the
4th November 2004, this time it is seen at Theydon Bois on a westbound sandite run.

This picture of a 1962 silver stock Central Line train was taken at Loughton in
the snow of early February 1991. Although snow has fallen many times since this
was probably the last ocassion when a substantial fall has lasted for several days.

HISTORY. What I like about this picture is that it could have been taken in the 1960s instead of Autumn 2007.
This is the only 1962 Silver Central Line stock still running...but for how much longer? The western end of the Central
Line already has a 1992 stock train converted for laying sandite so we at the eastern end of the line consider
ourselves fortunate to have this classic silver Tube performing the job, which is seen approaching Roding Valley
on October 29th 2007.

A Central Line train of 1956/59/62 tube stock leaves Ealing Broadway on
17 May 1994. Tube stock is built to a much smaller loading gauge than
surface stock. Photo and scan copyright Pat & David Othen, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada (dothen@ra.isisnet.com) |
