Looking east from the western end of platform 2 of Amersham station in Buckinghamshire. The station is served by Chiltern Railways services between London Marylebone and Aylesbury, and it is also the terminus of the mainline of London Underground's Metropolitan Line, with trains running from here to Baker Street with some continuing to Aldgate. The train on the left is London Underground A-stock fourth-rail EMU 5046, waiting at platform 3 before commencing a southbound service to central London.

Looking north from the southern end of Chesham station in Buckinghamshire, the London Underground station most distant from central London. Four-car A60-Stock EMU number 5116 operating the Metropolitan Line shuttle service between here and Chalfont and Latimer station waits at the only remaining operational platform. The disused platform to the left is now a rather overgrown station garden.

Layout mirrors suburban and even outer-urban duties of this fleet, which can go as far as Amersham, some 30mi Northwest of London... These sets also run on the East London Line. Aldgate. 19th August 2004. P.L.Guillemin (plguillemin@yahoo.fr) |

Now if you want a 'Fiesta Mexican Buffet' at a reasonable price...according to the poster...you should
hurry along to West Hampstead where this picture of a 1962 stock, Uxbridge bound Metropolitan Line train
was taken on the 10th November 2004. These trains that do not look their age, have been
re-furbished inside and still present the passengers with a pleasant travelling environment,
but their running gear is not surprisngly wearing out and they are due for replacement in a
year or so. They are also noticeably larger than regular tube trains with most of their lines
above ground or in the 'cut and cover' areas of central districts where the first London
underground lines were constructed not that far below street level.

London Underground Metropolitan Line 'A'-stock sub-surface EMU 5128 passes a Picallilly Line 1973 tube-stock EMU immediately west of Rayner's Lane station. The larger Metropolitan line train is en-route to Uxbridge (despite the Aldgate blind), while the Piccadilly line train (with the bored-looking driver) is waiting in the reversing siding prior to commencing a service to (most likely) Cockfosters.
This photograph clearly shows the difference in loading gauge bewteen the two types of train used on London Underground.

HISTORY. London Underground's East London Line will close on December 22nd 2007 and re-open in 2010 as part
of London Overground...so we thought it was about time we took a run and some pictures before it was too late!
This Underground branch, that was originally part of a line out of Liverpool Street, used to up until last year run
between Shoreditch and New Cross or New Cross Gate but now starts from Whitechapel. It will eventually form
part of a circular line encompasing the North London lIne, Clapham Junction, and Kensington Olympia. A train
is seen departing from Surrey Docks on the 9th November 2007.

HISTORY. There is clearly a very marked difference in the height of 'overground' Underground stock and those designed
for the deep tunnels. The first Underground trains ran not much below street level and adopted the cut and cover
approach with large tunnels. This is reflected in the size of the Metropolitan Line train on the left. On the right the
Piccadilly Line train spends much of its journey well underground and is subsequently smaller. The two were
Pictured at Rayners Lane on the 10th June 2007.

HISTORY. Recently restored to traffic Metropolitan Vickers built loco 'Sarah Siddons' dating from 1921 is seen alongside the A60
stock which finally ended these loco's passenger workings on London Undeground's Metropolitan line in 1961. No 12 however was
to continue in service for many years to come in an engineering capacity and later actually made it onto the Southern Region on a charter! The
date of this picture was the 5th June 2007 at Rickmansworth when 'Sarah' was doing some proving runs prior to a forthcoming special.
