The Sion Hill Tunnel, leading from the top (Clifton) station of the Clifton Rocks Railway, a long disused funicular railway located entirely in a tunnel between the Clifton and Hotwells areas of Bristol that is currently being restored by volunteers. This tunnel is not railway related, but dates from before the station's 1891 construction - its exact purpose is not completely certain. The side tunnel on the right is newly discovered and even more mysterious!

The entrance to the Clifton (top) station of the Clifton Rocks Railway, a long disused funicular railway located entirely in a tunnel between the Clifton and Hotwells areas of Bristol. The railway is currently being restored by volunteers. The photograph was taken during the Bristol Open Doors day, where many buildings that are not normally open to the public open their doors for a single weekend. The Clifton Rocks Railway was one of the most popular attractions, hence the queue!

The bottom (Hotwells) entrance to the Clifton Rocks Railway, a long disused funicular railway located entirely in a tunnel between the Clifton and Hotwells areas of Bristol that is currently being restored by volunteers. This photograph was taken from the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the road in front of the station is the now very busy A4 Portway, the main route between the M5 motorway and Bristol city centre. As part of the restoration a new footbridge over the road linking to the first floor of the staiton and also the "Zig-Zag", a footpath that provides the only current way up the 280ft cliff.

The route of the Clifton Rocks Railway, a long disused funicular railway located entirely in a tunnel between the Clifton and Hotwells areas of Bristol that is currently being restored by volunteers. This photograph was taken from the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the bottom station in Hotwells is the grand facade at the end of the row of buildings. The top station in Clfiton is behind the trees in the top left of the picture, to the left of the white-filled arched facade. The road directly outside the bottom station is the very busy A4 Portway, the main road between the M5 motorway and Bristol City Centre (background, right and centre) - this photograph was taken about mid-morning on a Saturday. As part of the restoration, a new footbridge from the first floor of the bottom station and the "Zig-Zag" footpath over the road, possibly also linking to the currently derelict landing stages in the river.

The top of the Clifton Rocks Railway, a long disused funicular railway located entirely in a tunnel between the Clifton and Hotwells areas of Bristol. The railway is currently being restored by volunteers. This photograph was taken from the entrance to the top (Clifton) station. The Bristol Open Doors Day poster is hung on a brick wall built when the BBC used the by-then disused tunnels during the second world war. The two walls on the left and right, which are covered stairwells, also date from the post-operational period - there were originally four parallel tracks. The "car" is a lifesize mockup of the front end.

One of the two former able wheels at the top the Clifton Rocks Railway, a long disused funicular railway located entirely in a tunnel between the Clifton and Hotwells areas of Bristol that is currently being restored by volunteers. There were originally two pairs of cars, this wheel was for the lefthand pair (viewed from the top), the right hand two rails are for the second car from the left (again viewed from the top). The rail next to the wall of the later stairwell is one of the two for the leftmost car. The black wall in the distance is also obviously later, and dates from when the BBC used the tunnels as a bomb-proof broadcasting location during the Second World War.

This photograph was taken from the top (Clifton) station looking down the righthand (looking from the top) stairway that was built during the second world war to access BBC broadcasting offices located in the tunnel. The stairway uses most of the space formerlly occupied by the rightmost (from the top) of the four cars.
