Cab/First-class car of a Class 442 of South West Trains seen at London-Waterloo, awaiting departure to Portsmouth Harbour.
These units were built in 1987-88 while the Dorset Coast was being electrified (750V DC, live rail). They run on the Wessex Electrics between London, Portsmouth, Weymouth and Southampton. These were the first trains in the World ever to run at 160kph-100mph using live rail electrification. They were refurbished and reliveried in 2000. 29th November 2003. Guildford May 2003, one of the premier EMU of SOuth West Trains, developing nearly as much powet as Class 55 Deltic at the rail these units have been called the ultimate development of the Mark 3 carriage - I agree!

Class 442 'Wessex' units have now come off lease with Southwest Trains so this is a special where you would
not normally see the class on the branch to Windsor and Eaton Riverside pictured approaching Wraysbury.

Southwest Trains have now stopped using class 442s or 'Wessex' Units. However these trains that are
popular with passengers may see further use as stanby sets for the Gatwick Express or by Southern
on the busy line to Brighton. This one was pictured operating a special at Waterloo on the 3rd February 2007.
