4-car EMUs built by BR York from 1964 to 1972.
Originally built: No. 7031 to 7058 (4BIG = Buffet Brighton).
Refurbished since 1985 and renumbered as 2001..2004 (8DIG class 422/0), 2101..2112 (4BIG class 422/1), 2201..2210 (4BIG class 422/2) and 2251..2262 (4BIG class 422/3).
8DIG units (Dedicated Brighton) were formed 1992 by coupling 4CIG + 4BIG units. They remained in service until 1996.

No: 76747, from Connex South Central unit No: 2256, is seen coupled to the rebodied Networker Classic coach, No: 76112 (ex Class 421/3 DTCsoL), at the South West Trains Bournmouth depot open day on Saturday 16th May 1998 at 07:09.
