British Class 421/4 EMU 4-CIG car unit. Unit 421866 at Eastbourne, Sussex in platform 2 on a damp Sunday morning June 6th 1999. This unit is in Connex South-East livery and the driving second trailer is closest to the camera. This unit dates from the early 1970s and originally had 3 1st class compartments next to the drivers cabs in both driving coaches. Connex had downgraded the 1st class in one coach per unit without changing the 3 aside seating. The sets are powered by a 740 kW, 992 hp non-driving motor brake second and have a 90 mph, 145 kmph top speed.

EMU Class 421. This is unit 421719 on an eastbound working to Eastbourne passing non-stop through Berwick station on Thursday June 10th, 1999. The rear of the train shows a red panel on the roller blind in lieu of a taillight. The yellow patch on the roof indicates the carriage with first class seating as do the number 1s on the leading edges of the driving cab. Upper quadrant signals were still in use although the traditional level crossing gates had been replaced with automatic half barriers.

This comparison of Class 421 unit number 1727 and Class 207 number 207201 illustrates the similarity between the two designs. The DEMU is actually slightly narrower than the EMU, although this is not obvious in this view. The Class 421 is also fitted with a gangway.

Its always good to have the opportunity to picture the old alongside the new and this is no exception. A Slam Door in the form of a Cig
and a new Gatex 460 unit provide the comparison. Both derilict Battersea Power station and the blue sky
with a nice scattering of white fluffy clouds combine to make the picture which was taken on the 20th Ju;y 2005.
