Interiors of Buffet/service-car of a Class 412 of South West Trains, seen upon turnaround at London-Waterloo. This car also has a buffet counter (not in use any more) and a Guard compartment, further in the background. These units now mainly run on fast services to Southampton, but they used to be diagrammed on Boat Trains between London-Victoria and Folkestone-Harbour ot Dover-Western Docks until the early-80s Pre-refurbishment (early-80s), this car used to have a dining-room and a full galley. Upon refurbishment, catering on South East services was downgraded to buffet-accommodation, and shortly thereafter to a mere trolley-service, which has displaced 412s to London-Waterloo fast services. 8th December 2003. Class 423 on a shunting move at Clapham Junction. The unit moved from Clapham Yard (adjacent to the station) down to the crossover and then back up on the Windsor Lines, probably using the Windsor Lines to access the East Putney 'London Underground' to Wimbledon and the Depot there. This route is used to avoid congestion on the old LSWR mainline. Date is August 02, 2003.
[actually, 2314 is a class 412/1 unit, MvU]

Waterloo, on a dull St. Valentine's Day morning, Monday 14th February 2005.
Imagine the conversation :
Class 412 4-BEP unit no. 2311, one of the last two in service with South West Trains at that time, waits at the rear of a 12-car slamdoor formation about to depart empty from Platform 13. In Platform 12, Class 450 Desiro unit no. 450078 has recently arrived at the head of a 12-car formation on the 07.24 service from Basingstoke, substituting - ironically - for a 12-slam, and will soon depart at the rear of the 08.39 service to Southampton Central. The diagram starting with the 07.24 ex-Basingstoke service ran as a 12-slam every day for the rest of the week. Photo by Mark Ziemba, scan by Fuji. |
