Farewell to Connex on South Eastern Trains and to slam-door stock...
Cab/Standard-class Trailer of a Class 411 of (ex-Connex) South Eastern Trains, seen at London-Charing Cross, awaiting departure to Hastings. As on most 411s of SET, BR-Network South East livery has remained, but gone are the old logos... These units used to run on Boat Trains between London-Victoria and Folkestone-Harbour/Dover Western Docks until 1994-95. They were then diagrammed on Kent Coast services, and are now under withdrawal. They have also been running on the "1066 Electrics" London-Hastings since the electrification of Tonbridge-Hastings in 1986. 9th December 2003. P.L.Guillemin (plguillemin@yahoo.fr) |

This trip brings back many childhood memories for the older one of us! We were shortly to catch
the very last 12 coach CEP from London Victoria to the Kent Coast. Its the 20th July 2005 and
the stock is seen in the depot sandwiched between two modern units prior to heading to nearby Victoria.

The clock shows 1730 as the CEPs slowly make their way out of the depot to Victoria Station to form
the very last 12 coach departure to the Kent Coast ...the 1749 on the 20th July 2005.

Victoria Station is just under the road bridge...not that far on foot but we must dash if we are to
ensure we get onto the platform in time to enjoy the last 12 coach CEP run down to Kent...the 1749
on July 20th 2005.

Re-furbished interiors still presented passengers with a pleasant travelling environment, whilst you ceratinly could not complain
about the ride on the CEPs. Pictured on their very last 12 car Kent Coast run on the 20th July 2005.

At Faversham the 12 coach train divides. These 8 coaches branch off to the left and take the
Thanet Line with a final destination of Broadstairs. Its farewell therefore to CEP units numbered
1699 and 1697 as they complete the last part of their journey. The date is the 20th July 2005.

The remaining 4 coaches that make up CEP 1698 now set off for Dover Priory. The train has to my knowledge
always divided like this with the first 8 coaches bound for the Thanet area and the last 4 destined for Dover.
In the 1950's I would have made this journey at first by steam but then on CEPs when later introduced. It was
to say the least something special to have taken the last 12 coach CEP down to Faversham and then watch the
4 cars set off for Dover, my final destination all those years ago being just one stop short at Kearsney.
The date of this little bit of SE trains Kent Coast railway history was the 20th July 2005 having formed the
1749 departure from London Victoria.
