Southern Class 377 EMU 377145, like all new-build third rail units in Great Britain has a recess in the roof of one of the cars to house a pantograph. The purpose of this is to allow conversion to overhead current collection in the future. Although I am not aware of any planned conversions, the Health and Safety Executive are known to have a dislike for electrified rails - for example all new electrified railway in the country must use OHLE, although extensions to existing third rail systems are permissible (at least for now). This photograph was taken from the footbridge from platform 8 at London Bridge station.

The 4 VEP 3417 assisted by 73109 made its way to East Grinstead on the 17th January 2009 and then
onto the Bluebell Railway where work on their extension continues. This was not only a very unusual
move as the Bluebell Railway mantains a steam only policy but also a very brief one as a few days later it
went to Eastleigh where the well cared for unit that is in full working order can be better looked after.
Alongside is one of the latest EMUs a class 377.
