Class 309 'Clacton' EMU 309627 is one of a handful remaining in service for North Western Trains. It is seen stabled at Manchester Piccadilly in North West Express livery. The units are used primarily on services to Manchester Airport.

Driving Trailer Standard of First North Western Class 309 No.616, at the buffer stops at London Liverpool St during a special run from Manchester to Clacton in May 2000. The Class 309s were built by BR in 1962/3 for the London, Colchester and Clacton route, they were refurbished in the 1980s and finished their working days around Manchester in 2000.
