Really not a very good picture of a blue train, now coloured orange, but
it's included here for completeness. SPT 303 045 arrives at Glasgow
Central from Weymss Bay. In late 1999 when this was shot, 303s were only
used on this route to cover for occasional unit shortages and for peak hours,
but on this particular Sunday it was pressed into service. The 303s were
normally diagrammed for short distance runs such as the Cathcart Circle and
Hamliton Circle local services, expected to be withdrawn sometime during
2000 when the 100mph 334s are phased into service around Greater Glasgow.
The units have a maximum speed of 70mph, and quite lame acceleration. A class 156 DMU can easily outperform this outdated electric unit. However, having been built in 1960s for 6.25kV line voltage and later converted for 25kV operation, it was the zenith of its time. Photo by Lexcie Lu, http://www.lexcie.zetnet.co.uk/ |

Probably the Indian summer for these units. Photographed at Motherwell during the end of June 2001 this unit is seen at Newton. With the introduction of the Class 334 units these should ultimately be scrapped, the class has worked for the Strathclyde area since their introduction as the 'Blue Trains'.

303043 waits to depart from Dalmuir with a service to Motherwell. The coach closest to camera is probably the last remaining 303 car with the orginal "widney" sliding vent windows. These were replaced with hinged hopper windows after refurbishment. This coach originally belonged to another 303 set, the rest of which was destroyed by vandals.
