Farewell to Eurostars on the Old Boat Train Route...
London-bound Eurostar seen at Dollands Moor, on the transitional tracks between Eurotunnel and Network Rail domains. This set has just lowered its pantograph and already uses the 750V live rail. One can see the remnants of the old Continental Junction between Eurotunnel and Network Rail (ex-Railtrack) tracks, which was removed an relocated to a more suitable place in September 2002, closer to Saltwood tunnel, in order to avoid any flat crossing between CTRL and the Old Boat Trains Route. Since 28th September 2003, this has been history, as London-bound Eurostar services use CTRL, whose "up" track is visible on the right, further away. Dollands Moor. 14th September 2003. Farewell to Eurostars on the Old Boat Train Route...
Continent-bound Eurostar seen at Dollands Moor, on the transitional tracks between Eurotunnel and Network Rail domains. This set still uses the 750V live rail, but is about to switch to the 25kV-OHLE. One can notice the voltage changeover panel "750 BR" for the transitional tracks, dating back to the early-90s, at a time when British Rail was still alive... The New Continental Junction is further in background, right of the CTRL flyover. Since 28th September 2003, this has been history, as Eurostar services are routed on CTRL in this area. Final countdown for London-Waterloo International (Closure: 13th November 2007 !!!).
Doorstep of a TMST car, in the mode for platforms built to BR-W6 loading-gauge, meaning that only the middle and upper steps are in use, while the lower step remains folded within the carbody. The very narrow gap between the carbody and the platform is also well in evidence. Eurostar 9132 (London Waterloo International ---> Bruxelles Midi/Brussel Zuid). London-Waterloo International. 11th November 2007.

Doorstep of a TMST car, seen in London-St Pancras International.
Mode for platforms built to continental standards, meaning that the 3 steps are in use, unlike in the days of Waterloo International. The gap between the lower step and the platform is about the same as in Brussels, and thence narrower than in Paris-Nord, Lille-Europe, Calais-Fréthun TGV and any other French mainline station. A passing east-bound Eurostar as seen through the heavily graffitied passenger shelter at Westenhanger station. Sunday morning, 7 October, 2007. D h Thomas. thomdh@hotmail.com |
Sometimes an event takes place that you can be fairly certain will NEVER happen again...
and this is surely one of them. On top of the barge alongside HMS Belfast
there is a Eurostar Class 373 locomotive. Its 10 years since Eurostar started
passenger services through the Channel Tunnel and this quite remarkable view marks that event. Picture taken
from Tower Bridge London soon after 11.00 am on Tuesday 16th November 2004.

In this view the Eurostar can clearly be seen looking very different to any
other Class 373 with HMS Belfast providing a most unusual backdrop. The
date is Tuesday 16th November 2004 and the picture is taken on the River Thames London.

This close up view of the Eurostar reveals that the livery appears to be highlighting
destinations you could possibly travel to. It is officially described
as 'The Language of Places' and is shown here alongside HMS Belfast opposite the
Tower of London on the 16th November 2004.

Soon after 1.00pm we returned to the River to see that the barge was now being
prepared for its return trip. This view is looking east towards Tower Bridge whilst the
welcomed appearence of the sun now highlights the Eurostar on top of the barge nicely. The reason
for this quite amazing spectacle is to celebrate the first 10 years of passenger trains through
the Channel Tunnel. Pictured from London Bridge on the 16th November 2004.

The tug hauling the barge with the class 373 Locomotive on top is now ready to move into the middle
of the River Thames and then make slow progress towards Tower Bridge which will soon be raised.
The date of this quite astonishing sight was the 16th November 2004.

Another closer view of the class 373 which we understand is from a 'north of London' set. If it was
to ever run over here in this livery it would almost certainly require an area in warning panel yellow
on the front. The place is the on River Thames in London and the date November 16th 2004.

The Tug with the barge in tow and the Eurostsar on top is almost ready to head downstream...but only after
the traffic has been stopped to allow Tower Bridge to be raised. The date is November 16th 2004 London.
Photo from James & Martin's Picture Collection Copyright 'Jampics' m.hawkes7@ntlworld.com British and Foreign Railway Pictures Jampics Fotopic. |
With Tower Bridge now raised the Eurostar can continue its journey. As someone who has not seen
this bridge raised before I would never had thought that it would have been to allow a TRAIN to go underneath! The date of this
historic sight was the 16th November 2004...and the reason to mark the first 10 years of Eurostar services.
Photo from James & Martin's Picture Collection Copyright 'Jampics' m.hawkes7@ntlworld.com British and Foreign Railway Pictures Jampics Fotopic. |
The Eurostar is now returning downstream on the River Thames having
arrived early in the morning of Monday November 15th 2004 it is seen departing from
the centre of London at lunchtime on the 16th...a brief but quite unforgettable visit.
Fortunately we knew how long it was to remain on view and were free to jouney into the
Capital to picture this unique sight.
Photo from James & Martin's Picture Collection Copyright 'Jampics' m.hawkes7@ntlworld.com British and Foreign Railway Pictures Jampics Fotopic. |
Tower Bridge has now come down and the flow of traffic on this important north south road link
will shortly resume. The Eurostar has not however quite disappeared and can just be seen heading
in the direction of Canary Wharf, which is visible in the distance, along with the clouds bringing more
gloomy weather...well at least the sun came out for its departure! The date is 16th November 2004 and
follows its display on the Thames to publicise 10 years of Eurostar operation. It is difficult to
imagine a better setting for such an event.
