The lonely 90 023 in RfD livery awaiting its next turn of duty at signal E465 at the end of platform 21 in Edinburgh Waverley. The locomotives are not often stabled here, the usual location for the loco to be parked is either at the Motorail Terminal or actually adjacent to either platform 20 or 21. On this occasion platform 20 was being used for a late-running North Berwick EMU and an GNER class 91 trainset had just arrived into platform 21, as a result the 90 had to be worked permissively into the platform and makes a nice picture in that location. 9 April 1999 at 2312 hours with Jessop’s cheap ISO 400, 8 seconds at f8. Ready, Set, Go! Two Railfreight Distribution class 90/0s lined up ready for action against a background of Scotrail class 305/2s. One wonders why there is no ‘Eric the electric’ or something similar in those Thomas the Tank Engine books, surely this shot would be perfect for an illustration? Stabling the locomotives with such accuracy requires great skill on the part of the engineman. Oh, and has anyone noticed, Crewe Electric Depot can’t really decide whether class 90 cab window surrounds should be grey or yellow... (or is someone pedantic going to mail me and tell me 90 026 is actually maintained at Inverness(!)?) The 90 025 is seen in a sorry state at the Motorail Terminal, Edinburgh Waverley. Rust is visible on the body immediately beyond the yellow warning panel; it is possible that the locomotive has not had a repaint since 1993 given its early RfD livery ~ no branding and along with the cast BR double-arrow logo. The livery was evidently converted from the disasterous departmental grey of that era, the top dark-grey band being narrower than the bottom light-grey unlike the other RfD-livered locos. The red RfD diamonds on the other side had faded almost to white! The working of the Sleeper seemed to be more complicated than I thought. As I was taking this round of photographs I was informed by a Scotrail staff that the up (Southbound) sleeper from Fort William are in fact attached to the 2355 ex-Edinburgh train (1C11) at Carstairs and not in Edinburgh; on this particular evening the loco in charge was 87 021 Robert the Bruce, the first time I had seen an 87 on that duty. It raises the (interesting) question ‘what do they do with this loco after it brings the ECS (5C11) from Polmadie?’ The ECS train starts at 2057 from the depot and arrives at 2203. Appropriate research reveals that there are two daily Carstairs-Euston sleepers: 1M11 Carstairs-Euston, comprising of 1C11 ex-Edinburgh at 2355 and 1M11 ex-Glasgow at 2355, joined at Carstairs, using the 1C11 loco, which would have been stabled at the Motorail Terminal the previous day. 1M16 Carstairs-Euston, comprising of 1M16 ex-Inverness at 2020, 1B01 ex-Fort William at 1950, and 1B16 ex-Aberdeen at 2140. All trains run via Edinburgh, using the loco from 5C11. The 1M11 loco returns to Edinburgh with 5O40 Polmadie-Edinburgh ECS and is stabled at the Motorail Terminal. Looks like the Scotrail guy confused the Glasgow sleeper with the Fort William one, or maybe I didn’t understand what he was saying, but here we are, the complete sleeper diagram :) Very sad, I know, but I was curious, and I was also trying to see if there is a more efficient way they could have moved the passengers, i.e. with less ECS and light loco workings. Oh, and here’s yet more sad facts about class 90s: 90 026 has full yellow warning panel not carried by other RfD 90s, 90 022 has cabside number in the same position as 90 026 but different to other RfD 90s, 90 018 is the only Res 90 with number on the front, and 90 026 lacks small RfD motif (normally applied beside the cab door) on the equipment side. I never thought there could be so much variation between the locos! The accelerating power of the class 90 electric locomotive. EWS/RfD 90 026 (Crewe Intenational Electric Maintaince Depot) moving away from a rake of ScotRail Mk.3 Sleeper coaches and a luggaug van (shown). The shutter time for this pic was a mere 3 seconds, but it managed to move out of the left hand side of the frame, having started from a dead stand. The features behind the locomotive are clearly visible. This pic was taken without a tripod, inline with Railtrack regulations. By attaching my camera to a railway trolley with a set of laboratory boss & clamp, I was able to adhere to the Railtrack guidelines and save some money on a tripod. Railfreight Distribution 90 036 at Glasgow Central, 6 June 2000, having arrived with the previous night's 1S26 (the Caledonian Sleeper). Note the revised Railfreight European Livery, with yellow cab roof, orange SNCF-style trim, triple-tone grey and red lettering. This locomotive was reclassified from class 90/1 to allow a top speed of 110mph after EWS realised there was increased demand for spot-hire high-speed electric passenger locomotives. The 75mph speed limit in class 90/1s is arbitrary and relates purely to cost savings associated with the reduced maintenance regime for a lower top speed. The loco will now detach and return to Polmadie light engine, after the stock is hauled away by any random locomotive which happens to be hanging about, in the case of that day it was Res 47 775. EWS 90036 is unique...no other loco has ever carried this livery...which we believe maybe partly French
influenced. It must certainly be due for a repaint soon but in the meantime it is on hire to Anglia as its London
bound train goes through Stratford on the 3rd November 2003.

Locomotive in your face! a large pic of Railfreight Distribution (now EWS) 90 040 seen here stabled at Edinburgh Waverley Motorail Terminal, July 1999. This locomotive is part of the recently reclassified class 90/0 series (note the darker and cleaner ‘0’ numerial on the bodyside). EWS reclassified the 75mph 90/1s as the 110mph 90/0s sometime in June in order to allow for greater operational flexibility in the sleeper diagrams. There is no physical change to the locomotive, the only change associated with the reclassification is maintenance procedure. The locomotive retain its drawhook and freight buffers unlike the dedicated Res locomotives 90 016~019 which have passenger-style buckeye couplers. Incidentally, 90 019 was recently named Penny Black after the infamous stamp.
