Things are looking bleak for the class recently with firstly Virgin West Coast stopping using them, the Anglia 86s
prone to failure and likely to be replaced by 90s, and two Freightliner locos have been seriously damaged
in an injury free accident near Crewe when they ran into the back of another Freightliner train. They are of course
nearly 40 years old and have seen considerable use in this time on both express passenger and freight traffic.

Freightliners 86609 is now we think the oldest class 86 still in main line service. The class first entered traffic in 1965. It has certainly proved the most sucessful of the
earlier electric loco designs as the likes of classes 81, 82, 83, 84 and 85 have long gone.

We have not seen a pair of Freightliner 86s on a liner for almost 2 months as there
was no access to Ipswich under the wires in this direction. Here 86615 and
newly painted 86639 come off the bend at Stratford and head out east. The date is September 9th 2004.
