Class 73s have never been regular visitors to Stratford...particularly ones in Gatwick Express livery! However
what made this appearence really special was that it was to be the last occasion this loco 73208 was to be seen in this
livery before being painted into BR Rail blue. The date was July 20th 2006.

Top-n-tailing this somewhat unusual move with 73208 was 73204. Both locos are now owned by GBRf and they
were taking this single buffet coach through Stratford to nearby Ilford Depot on July 20th 2006.

Just over two weeks ago we saw this loco in Gatex livery....now 73208 has returned to its old haunt of Victoria Station but
this time looking absolutely SUPERB in BR Rail Blue. Partnering up with an equally immaculate looking 73136 the pair are shortly
to set off for a private GBRf lunchtime charter. The date August 10th 2006.

Yes...not only are the class 73s still at it...but looking immaculate as well! They first
started on the Gatwick Express way back in 1986 and this happens to be the very first of the sub-class
73 201. Most days at least one set will be out and although the class 460s are
starting to perform well, the need for these new units to have a major overhaul later
this year means the 73s will be required to fill in taking them into 2005. This picture was taken at Clapham Junction on the 12th May 2004.

OLD LOCOS STILL GOING STRONG AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.
Some locos that still see main line use in 2008 first took to the rails in the late 1950s or early 1960s making them 40 to 50 years old. Quite remarkable considering they were designed in a very different era. Class 73s were introduced from 1962 and have been mostly confined to the third rail 'Southern' region. Although EWS no longer operates them First owned GBRf has a small fleet that see regular engineering work assisted by a few others when required. Their versatility of being able to run off the third rail and also off a diesel engine makes them now unique and a useful asset for Network Rail which has two itself. Pictured here are 73204 and 206 at Wandsworth Town on the 3rd May 2008 both of which are ex-Gatwick Express locos.

GBRf 73s are not regularly seen around north London so we had to make an effort to get
down to Gospel Oak in time for them to pass top-n-tailing some barrier coaches from
Barking. Here 73205 waits at the signal for the all clear to join the North London
Line. The date is January 13th 2005.

The GBRf 73s are off with 73204 bringing up the rear and with no third rail on this occassion
running off diesel. These locos share the same engine as 'Thumpers' and at times you can hear
the same distinctive sound. Its Gospel Oak and the date is January 13th 2005.

This ex-Gatwick Express loco 73205 is soon to start working for GBRf on some engineering
trains in the SE. However it will have to 'return to the garage' first as soon after
arriving it 'blew a gasket' and was not able to take part in the Mid-Hants Diesel Gala.

GBRf are soon to take over some engineering traffic in the S.E. To run this they have returned some
ex-Gatwick Express 73s to use. Here we see 73204 followed by Fragonsets 33103, then GBRf 66s 713
and 717. This convoy was the first run by the class 73 and it is pictured at South Acton on July
1st 2004.

Railtrack livered class 73s 213 and 212 have been painted into Network Rail's all over yellow. This unlikely
combination that has the Queen of Scots set in tow along with Fragonsets 73107, which will return with the stock after their
proving run, was pictured on the 15th November 2005 at Wandsworth Road.
