E5001 or class 71 is essentially a third rail DC loco that operated on the Southern Region. It does unusually for a SR loco also have a pantograph though. This was for use when operating at one the Kent coal fields and possibly in depots like Hither Green which did at some stage have wires up. This stylish looking loco has already returned to the main line once in the early 1990's, so hopefully we might look forward to a second comeback.
