Class 03 shunter 03020 is seen in preservation at the South Yorkshire Railway, looking obviously in need of restoration. Also visible are a Class 04, a short-lived equivalent design to the Class 03, and an 08.

Class 03 Based in Derbyshire, Peak Rail is home to many ex British Rail shunters than any other preserved railway in the UK, with examples from Classes 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 07, 08 & 11. In this illustration, taken on a wet & miserable Sun 4th Mar 2007, Class 03 - 03037 , Class 04 - D2272 & Class 03 - 03027 stand at Rowsley South at 13:38.

The Class 03 outlived all other small diesel mechanical shunters on BR, lasting in service until 1989 in mainland Britain. 03066 is a typical example, seen in preservation at the South Yorkshire Railway.

Class 03 shunter 03079 was one of two sent to the Isle of Wight to replace the Class 05 shunter 05001. Both had their roof height reduced to negotiate the tunnel at Ryde. 03079, still in blue livery, remained in service until June 1996, and is seen at Sandown.

This picture shows shunter 03079 now in preservation, based on the Derwent Valley Light Railway, Murton, near York.
This loco was one of two Class 03s that remained in service on the Isle Of White until 1998, long after the classes withdrawal from use elswhere in the UK. The other loco, 03179, now sees use at Hornsea depot, London, for train operator WAGN. Photo by Vincent Middlebrough. |

WSR 2-6-0 no 9351 is a controversial rebuild of former ex-GWR 2-6-2T Large Prairie no 5193, based around the GWRs proposed, but never built, Small Mogul design.
