South West Trains 2-car Class 170/3 DMU 170305 approaches the eastern end of platform 2 at Salisbury station, where it will become the lead of two units on a service to London Waterloo. Prior to this service the unit was stabled in the depot adjacent to the northern side of the station. The move to get here involves exiting the depot westbound, reversing and traversing points at the western enf of the station, running eastbound alongside the unused platform 1 (on the left of the photograph) before reversing again to cross points at the eastern end and arrive at platform 2 westbound.

Newly painted Class 170 in South West Train livery. This unit was
Photographed at Reading Station having worked the Brighton - Reading
servcice on 21 March 2001. These units are basically the same as all
the other Class 170 Units entering service with other Operators.
South West Train are planning to use these units on the London Waterloo
- Exeter Line,

Class 170's seem to be becoming the 'standard' DMU of long to medium distance operators. One of the South West Trains fleet pauses at Basingstoke on a Salisbury - London run. This unit will probably work back attached to a 159 to increase capacity at peak hours.

One of the new Porterbrook/SRA Turbostars seen at Salisbury, of note on these new units is the revised lighting cluster and the green seating, since these units were original destined for another TOC.
Date of the photograph is 12 March 2004, the unit worked the eight car formation from Waterloo which splits at Salisbury with the front three car going forward whilst the rear portions double reverse into the adjacent Depot.
