Class 170 (3-car) Turbostar (170 102) of Midland Mainline, seen upon turnaround at London King's Cross.
These units have been running since their introduction in 1998-99 on semi-fast services between London and Derby/Nottingham/Sheffield. They occasionally run on "Project Rio" (i.e. MML services between London-St Pancras and Manchester Piccadilly running as a relief for the West Coast Mainline during the blockades around Crewe and Stafford). This sight will soon be history. In 2004, MML will replace with Meridians 222s, a more refined version of Virgin Voyagers 220s. MML 170s will migrate to other franchises operated by National Express, which also runs MML. One can also notice a refurbished HST of MML on the right, with the new livery. 09th December 2003. at St Pancras station. These units are to form the semi-fast
services between London and Nottingham & Derby. These units were
not in service at the time of the photograph at the beginning of
May 1999, though they worked two return services and also the
Derby - Matlock service.

into the city. Occasionally they can be seen in multiple.

Class seen at Cossington heading a Up working. I like this shot even though the subject is not the centre of the picture, and also I liked the framing of the subject, something I would like to do more off when location permits. This is Midland Mainline Turbostar heading south on 19 October 2003.

The old order passeth! These Turbostars are due to be replaced by the new Class 222 Meridians, this is also a dated unit in that it is only a two car unit, and not the now standard three car unit - the date is 23 February 2004, taken at Cossington.

Class 170 unit seem at Derby on 08 March 2003. Note the fact that this is a two car unit, when all units should have be converted to three car units. These units will eventually displaced by the new Meridian units based on the Class 220/221 Voyager design.
