The Class 151 was intended as an alternative design to BREL's Class 150 "Sprinter". Two units were built by Metro-Cammell, and saw trials on the Matlock Bath branch from Derby. No more were built, the Class 150 design being selected for further orders. The two 151's were withdrawn from service in 1990, and are currently parked out of use outside the Railway Technical Centre in Derby. It is not known if any further use is planned for them.
