Class 126 DMSL (Driving Motor Standard Lavatory).

This view of the gutted interior of 51017 at Bo'Ness on the Bo'Ness & Kinneil Railway on Sunday 26th April 1998 shows the amount of restoration work still needing to be done on this unit to allow it to enter service once more.
Although the unit is currently operational, Removal of Blue Asbestos used for insulation within this and other stock, left all 3 cars of this unit (51043+59404+51017) no more than empty shells, However most of the rebuilding work has been focussed on DMBSL 51043 and is therefor nearly complete which then leaves 59404+51017 & also 79443 to be rebuilt.
More volunteer effort would be very welcome on getting this unit fit for carrying passengers once more, so if you are skilled or unskilled and would like to help on restoring this unit, please E-Mail the Swindon Diesel Preservation Society at -

Class 126, 3-Car DMU.

Preserved Class 126 unit, No: 51017+59404+51043, are seen in the yard at Bo'Ness on the Bo'Ness & Kinneil Railway on Sunday 7th June 1998.
Although plated over in this view, these driving ends originally had gangway connections at this end only. This was to allow two sets to be coupled up together, with these vehicles at the inner ends, so that through connections between the two units was possible.
***51043 is not visible in this view due to the curve/angle.***

Although DMBSL 51043 was the only car fitted with seats, this was the first time since asbestos removal in 1993 that this unit has ran in passenger service.

It is hoped that this unit will be able to operate during the Diesel gala being held here on 5th & 6th Sept 1998, however only 51043 will be able to carry passengers as all of the seats have currently been re-fitted to this vehicle but wall panels have not.

Creating what could truly be regarded as a genuine Scottish scene somewhere in the Glasgow or Ayr area during the late 1970's, is in fact the Bo'Ness & Kinneil Railway in Central Scotland in 1998.
Here we see Blue liveried Class 126 DMU, No: 51043+51017 standing alongside Blue liveried Class 27's, No: 27005 & 27001 at Bo'Ness as it waits for the right of way into the station in order to work the last train on the last day of the diesel gala, the 18:10 Bo'Ness - Birkhill - Bo'Ness service on Sun 6th Oct 1998.

51043-S298.jpg (108083 bytes)

B&KR/SRPS Class 126 DMU.

The Swindon Class 126 DMU's were equipped with two types of coupling, these being screw couplers (coupling hooks attached to fronts of vehicles and coupled together via a coupling chain/link) and also American style knuckle couplers called 'buckeye's'. The Knuckle head could be raised and lowered. With the knuckle in the 'raised' position the standard screw couplers could not be used as the knuckle head covered the drawhook but with the knuckle in the 'lowered' position which cleared the hook, screw coupling could be used but 'Buckeye' could not.
This shot of the lower front end of DMBSL 51043 as it stands at Birkhill on the Bo'Ness & Kinneil railway service during the diesel gala event on Saturday 4th September 1999 shows the Buckeye 'knuckle' coupler in the raised position. Also note a Freightliner taillamp being used.!!!

Taken from the trailing cab window of DMSL 51017, 51043+51017 approach Kinneil Halt, on the Bo'Ness & Kinneil Railway with the 18:10 Bo'Ness - Birkhill service during the diesel gala weekend on Sun 6th Sept 1998. This was the first year that this unit, following blue asbestos removal during 1992, had run in revenue earning service since then. However, only 51043 was able to carry passengers as 51017 is still an empty shell.
