From this position I was staring down the platforms of London St. Pancras and in the middle of the picture
you can see 319375 and 222019 (yes it is a Meridian! But not a 9-car one, as the Meridian saga goes)
platforms 11 and 10 respectively. Although you would expect chaos with Thameslink now utilising STP, it was the August Bank Holiday at the time and therefore the atmosphere wasn't that chaotic, depsite there being quite a lot of people every now and then. The picture was taken on Sunday 29th August 2004 using a Kodak Easyshare DX6440, and anyone who wishes to use this photo must first seek permission from Edward Sloley via edward.sloley@ntlworld.com |

After about 23 minutes, we were within 1km of the terminating platfroms and I decided to take a pic of
part of the approches to London St. Pancras and the goods sidings as well. One may also spot the new
(and possibly soon to be redundant - again) 25Kv a.c. overhead catenary.

After waiting for another train to pass in the opposite direction, we were moving again and now you can
see the west deck extension well under construction along with part of platform 8 and an unidentified
MML HST.

Yet another picture of the approaching Meridian at Platform 3 of Luton Airport Parkway. Once it departs,
it usually takes a mere 24 minutes to get to London St. Pancras assuming it does 100-110mph for most of
the MML down to about Cricklewood.

Here is another picture of the same Meridian at Platform 3 of Luton Airport Parkway, but looking in the
other direction this time (ie toward the south-east).

Another picture shows part of the Meridian interior in all its glory - overhead racks, ambient lighting,
dot-matrix notices above the elctronic doors, etc. This was the last pic taken before the Class 222 sped
off to London St. Pancras, which is currently undergoing major expansion as in 2 years Eurostars will stop
there. It's a shame the new Thameslink station under St. Pancras won't be until 2014 though.

At last! We have arrived at London St. Pancras and will have to leave the comfortable seating provided
in Standard Class. Apparently part of the First Class seating on all Meridians is declassified.

A picture of the Meridian that had just arrive at Platform 10 a few minutes ago, not to mention a small
crowd of passengers. Along Platform 12 a Thameslink Class 319 EMU is waiting for its next task.

Here is another picture of the Meridian waiting at Platform 10 as well as a Thameslink Class 319 EMU at
Platform 12 around 10.41am. Sights like this will be no more for the time being from 16th May 2005.

A telephoto view of an oncoming Midland Mainline Class 222 DEMU, better known as a Meridian. For
those of you who are part of railwayscene.co.uk, you'll know Meridians are my favourite train and may
also know me as 'mml222' for that reason.
Anyway, the approaching Meridian is heading toward London St. Pancras and is stopping off at Platform
3 of Luton Airport Parkway on the way. The time is 10 hours 7 minutes and 1 second exactly.
Photo taken: 26th March 2005 Author: Edward Sloley E-mail address: edward.sloley@ntlworld.com |
Here you have a fairly good view of the MML approaches and also the overhead catenary, soon to be
made redunadant again after the Thameslink blockade. Somehow I did not spot the Meridian leaving
STP.....
Photo taken: 26th March 2005 Author: Edward Sloley E-mail address: edward.sloley@ntlworld.com |
.....so I took another pic of the Meridian (in close up).....
Photo taken: 26th March 2005 Author: Edward Sloley E-mail address: edward.sloley@ntlworld.com |
.....and again, and then I stopped. I could have waited for more trains to pass, but I was more interested in
taking other pics in other spots. After some many months, Camley Street is now open to traffic under the
bridge, which is on the right side of this picture.

Is it just me, or do those Meridians pop up whenever I least expect? This one was heading to London St.
Pancras.

Here is view of one of the driver cabs of 222019 - one of a fleet of 16 4-car Meridians being delivered to
Midland Mainline over the coming months. Class 222 is a 'refinement' of Classes 220/221 (all by
Bombardier), and has received generally encouraging reviews from the public. I actually got off this
particular train when I arrived at St. Pancras - plenty of legroom and comfort! (Which is more than can be
said for the Turbostars in my opinion). Meridians could be the newest passenger trains in Britain today. It was such a shame that I didn't take pics inside the train, although at the time I didn't care that much. The picture was taken on Sunday 29th August 2004 using a Kodak Easyshare DX6440, and anyone who wishes to use this photo must first seek permission from Edward Sloley via edward.sloley@ntlworld.com |
This position offers a different view as you can see a disabled-friendly entrance to one of the coaches.
It also clearly indicates that the coach has First Class seats in it. And of course the new Midland
Mainline logo that has been around for about a year now. I love this train - try it out and you'll see what I mean! as it sped through Harpenden towards London on the 23rd March 2005.
