Class 201 DEMU number 1001 is preserved by Hastings Diesels Ltd. The present formation includes a Class 411 trailer vehicle, the width of which contrasts noticeably with that of the Hastings-gauge coaches. The unit is seen during the Connex South Central Oxted-Uckfield Line Gala day on 24th May 1998.

Class 201 DEMU number 1001 again, at Edenbridge Town station on the same day. Motor coach S60000 "Hastings" is leading; sister vehicle 60118 (at the other end of the unit) had to be renumbered from 60018 to avoid a clash with an EWS locomotive.

Less than 45 minutes after a pair of class 50s travelled through Stratford
the 'Hastings' Thumper unit comes off the N.London Line on its way to Suffolk.
Numbered 1001 and in Southern Green it makes a very unusual sight indeed.
The date is September 25th September 2004.

Hastings 'Thumper' unit 1001 is conveniently booked for short stop on platform 10a at Stratford
allowing us to record this rare event in some detail starting with a view the length of the train.

The third and rear power car on the 'Hastings' unit's charter differs from
that at the front in that it has the full yellow end. September 25th 2004 pausing
at Stratford E.London on its way to Suffolk.

When the 'Hastings' unit first entered service it ran with coaches all of the
same narrow profile...necessary because a tunnel on the route had insufficient
clearence. When the line was singled the sets could be strengthened with 'normal'
profile coaches and this is what you see here. Pictured at Stratford on
the 25th September 2004.

Hastings 'Thumper' unit 1001 on this occassion is double-headed as this
Picture shows with 2 power cars at the front of the train plus a third on the rear. These are not
paricularly powerful diesel units...around 600hp each from memory...and having all three cars available will
hopefully avoid any problems that might arise on route on what is a long day out for these trains.
The date is the 25th September 2004 at Stratford E.London.

Almost ready to depart Stratford the Hastings 'Thumper' Diesel Electric Multiple Unit or DEMU carrying the headbord
'Suffolk Clipper' on the 25th September 2004. The narrow profile is very evident in this view
as well as reduced warning panel.
