CDF_43.jpg (41027 bytes)

First Great Western HST at Cardiff Central, UK
Probably BRs greatest single success (apart from perhaps electrifying the West Coast Mainline), the 125mph (200km/h) High Speed Train, is still going strong on Great Western. These trains are still the main express trains from South Wales, Bristol, and the South West to London.
This is a Swansea - London express, calling at Cardiff Central platform 4. This is the leading power car. Every HST has two Class 43 power cars, one at each end.
The livery sported by this train is becoming increasingly rare - the green, gold and white being replaced by Firstgroup's corporate colours, of blue, white and pink, although Great Western is being allowed to retain its gold band, possibly due to its prestigious nature as a long-distance intercity operator.

CDF_Mark3.jpg (44448 bytes)

First Great Western HST at Cardiff Central, UK
Mark 3 carriages of a Swansea - London HST at Cardiff Central.
This train is quite a rare sight now, as there are few entire trains left without at least a few carriages in the new Firstgroup blue/pink livery - however this train is still in the green livery in its entirety.
First class is always at the London (Left-of-picture) end of the train. Nearest the camera is the buffet car, followed by 5 standard carriages.

FGW_Skewen_1.jpg (151905 bytes)

A First Great Western HST nearing its destination of Swansea races through the village of Skewen in August 2004. Whilst FGW have brought new Class 180 Adelante DMUs into operation, HSTs are still the most common trains on the South Wales Main Line and and their reign looks set to continue for years to come.
