EWS Class 59/2 On Mon 28th May 2007, Pathfinder Tours ran the 'Retro Retracer' railtour from Bristol to Leeds & return featuring classes of locomotives that played an important role in the development of freight by rail during the days of British Rail. One such class was the Class 59 locomotives, purchased by Foster Yeoman (59/0), ARC (59/1) & National Power (59/2), a design which later led onto what we now know as the Class 66. For the 1Z59 05:09 Bristol Temple Meads - Birmingam New Street leg of the tour, EWS supplied one of the former National Power Class 59/2's, namely 59203 'Vale of Pickering, which is pictured at Bristol at 04:39 awaiting clearance to shunt the railtour stock into the main platform.

59206 in DB SCHENKER Livery stands at Paddington on the 13th June 2009 about to take out a
charter to the West Country. Normally these locos are employed on heavy freight duties so this
passenger working is a relatively unusual one.
During the 12 months that DB have owned EWS they have made what can only be described as a token effort to re-brand their loco fleet. There is effectively only one other loco carrying this livery and that is 66152. Two class 37s were surprisingly also given the new look but their future now does not appear to be that bright being out of traffic and likely to remain that way. Meanwhile classes like 67s, 90s and 92s, all of which one would assume have a long term future with the company, but by the end of 2009 not a single one of them looks set to carry the new livery...DB prefering instead to carry on with what is now the rather faded EWS look or stickers!

Hanwell is on the Great Western main line not that far from Acton where freight such as this
aggregates train from the West Country is handled. There is therefore quite a lot of freight traffic
through the station as this returning empty Hanson jumbo train illustrates. 59102 is the loco and
the date is the 17th November 2005.
