We thought we were going to miss this loco as it had not been allocated the previous Saturdays charter,
but an email late on Sunday indicated that it was going to do the Plasmor on Monday...a cheer went up! Class 56s were regulars
on this train in the 90s and have continued to occasionally brighten the 'GM gloom' since, but not it looks like anymore unless EWS
have a re-think on their use. Introduced as a freight loco in 1976 with 3250 b.h.p. only two of the 135 built remain in traffic and these are due
to go on the 31st March 2004. Large Logo 56078 'Doncaster Enterprise' is seen passing Pudding Mill on the 29th March with the
loaded Plasmor...train of concrete building blocks.

LAST 'GRID' ON THE BLOCKS...56078 'Doncaster Enterprise' waits to depart from Bow Yard with the returning empties to Peterborough
on Monday 29th March 2004.

With a puff of white smoke 56078 sets off from Bow Yard on what will be one of its last freight
workings...it is due to take the farewell 56 tour on Wednesday 31st March 2004...with the returning empties
to Peterborough and then onto Heck. The loco would have set off from Peterborough at 05.42 arriving at Bow
at 10.24 and the complete journey might not see the loco back on depot until after midnight. New locos might be more reliable
but they cannot approach the older 'work-horses' for interest and character which is why along with the declining
class 47s and 37s, the 56s will be missed by many. Date 29th March 2004.

Its not every day a class of loco is withdrawn so one more picture of 56078
bringing the loaded Plasmor building block train into Bow is well worth it. Two days later
On Wednesday 31st March 2004, 56078 and 56115 ran the final 56 tour setting off from Bristol with 115 in charge,
then 78 took over for a while from York before they double-headed the last leg which no doubt included some spirited running.
With presently no other operator having plans to use CLASS 56s it looks like...FAREWELL TO THE GRIDS...at least over here that is!

in not quite so inspiring 'Fertis' livery and heading for France where it will work on
the construction of a new line. Pictured at Carpenters Park on the 6th September 2004.
