Virgin Crosscountry long-range 47 853 at Reading sometime in March 2000. This loco was undergoing a swap after coming in from Bournemouth. The coaches will continue on to Glasgow with the loco off Glasgow-Brighton, whilst the coaches for Brighton will be hauled by this loco. On that day engineering works was affecting the London-Basingstoke-Southampton Mainline between Winchester and Basingstoke, as a result the trains were diverted via the West of England main and Salisbury, and it is seen here pulling into Reading after passing Basingstoke. The trains to Glasgow were terminating at Carlisle as a result. Photo by alex lu (lexcie@innocent.com, http://www.lexcie.zetnet.co.uk/) |

Freightliner Heavy Haul's 47841 brings its loaded train through Harringay Green Lanes
on the return Isle of Grain to Dagenham aggregates. This is not the kind of working the
last remaining class members are normally associated with making this a particularly unusual
sighting. The date was June 11th 2005.

Dawlish is probably the most famous scenic spot for photographing trains in Britain. Situated in Glorious Devon, the line runs along the famous sea wall beside the English Channel enabling you to see the train coming from some way off, before coming to the station and town itself.
It then passes a mumber of hotels before entering a short tunnel continuing westward. In early July 2002 'Jampics' decided we had to visit this famous spot before Virgin Cross Country replaced 47 8s with Voyagers. The weather was good and most importantly so were the locos that turned up.
In this picture a Virgin 47 is approaching Dawlish on a train bound for the seaside resort of Paington. The date is July 4th 2002.

This loco was last year very active on Virgin Cross Country services, but with class 47s being replaced by Voyagers it now sees less arduous work on such things as drags and rescue duties. It is pictured at Nuneaton on 12th July 2003.

47805 is another variation on how the class have operated in the last year or so. The loco is
actually owned by Porterbrook but now on lease to Freightliner. Virgin markings have gone to be replaced
by Freightliner. The loco has then been hired in for a Ruggex and is seen having just dropped
off the supporters at Cardiff Central on 14th February 2004.

This became the last really common class 47 livery. Shortly to leave with an afternoon Glasgow Central
Virgin Cross Country service from London's Paddington Station is 47839. This loco has
since joined Riviera Trains and is now in a new blue livery.
It continues to see use on Charter trains and for driver training duties etc.
