47565-9.jpg (97846 bytes)

EWS Class 47/4.

47565 'Responsive' arrives light loco into Slateford station, Edinburgh on Saturday 3rd Oct 1998 after having been called out from Edinburgh Craigentinny depot to haul the 1E05, 08:00 Glasgow Central - London Kings Cross GNER service round the non-electrified, freight only Edinburgh Suburban (sub) Line due the direct line between here & Haymarket being closed & the overhead power isolated because of a fire at the Caledonian Brewery which overlooks the line at Slateford/Shandon. Unfortunately, just before 47565 got here the line was re-energised & re-opened allowing passage of all trains directly into Haymarket & Waverley stations.

EWS Class 47/4.

Another view of 47565 'Responsive' as it stands in Slateford station, Edinburgh on Saturday 3rd Oct 1998.
Once a familiar sight all over Scotland, especially on this route before electrification as they were the regular motive power for hauling trains from Edinburgh, which ran down the WCML, as far as Carstairs where the 47 would come off and an electric locomotive would then haul the train forward. They are now, despite being well over 200+ still in regular service, now very scarce in Scotland escpecially on this line. So the chance of seeing & photgraphing a Class 47 on this route was very welcome indeed despite being sick of the sight of them passing this location many years ago.

47572-S243.jpg (104062 bytes)

EWS Class 47/4.

EWS's Component Recovery & Distribution Centre at Wigan has become the final resting place for many redundant locomotives. All locomotives that arrive here are destined for stripping of all reusable components, many of which are now obsolete and are costly and/or hard to obtain. These components are then distributed around to be reused on other sevicable examples in order to keep them going. In this view of 47572 which had arrived here on 30th June 1999, shows that this locomotive has had most major compontents removed and one side of the bodyshell cut away by the time this picture was shot on 14th August 1999.

47635-10.jpg (111209 bytes)

EWS Class 47/4.

Due to an incident at Slateford in the early hours of Mon 16th Nov 1998 involving the 1S25, 21:30 London Euston - Inverness/Aberdeen/Fort William sleeper train, hauled by 90024, hitting two stolen vans placed on the main Carstairs - Edinburgh line immediately to the east of Slateford Station, all services to & from Edinburgh which use this line were subject to severe delay, cancellation or re-routing. As the incident took place after the train had cleared the Junction for access to & from the 'Freight only' Edinburgh Suburban line at Slateford, several services were diverted via this line to & from Edinburgh Waverley. One such service to do so was the 1E09, 10:00 Glasgow Central - London KX GNER service. However, as the Edinburgh Sub line is not electrified, this train, with 91024 still attached to the rear, was dragged round Edinburgh sub by 47635. In this view we see 47635 dragging the train onto the 'Freight only' line at Slateford/Meggatland.

47475 'Restive' was an EWS 'freight' loco and was unfortunately one of the earlier EWS examples in Res livery to be withdrawn. It is seen here at Stratford in 1998.

This is 47635 pictured at Doncaster in 2000. It was then one of the last remaning class 47s to be running in Parcels Livery. Now in Large Logo Blue it is considered to be the last 'original' EWS class 47.
