47114 Freightlinerbulk signal checked at Coventry waiting to cross the down main in order to follow a cross country line towards Oxford and Didcot. Coventry is on the West Coast Main, but is part of the Birmingham loop, the Glasgow main goes directly north via Nuneaton and Lichfield bypassing Coventry and Birmingham New Street. The WCML narrows to two lines when the Birmingham branch leaves the Glasgow main, but as most traffic is diverted onto the Birmingham loop, this does not matter. 28 Jaunary 2000.

The same 47114 Freightlinerbulk pulling away after coming to a complete stop at the signal. The driver inched into Coventry at around 3mph, but the signal was not to clear, and he had to bring the train to a complete stop. One minute later a Silverlink County EMU appeared and stopped on the down platform and the signal was cleared. It was interesting to see the way the buffer compressed even after the locomotive had come to a complete stop, yet the loco had enough brake force not to be pushed forwards. The 47 accelerated away more swiftly than I had expected, although it was a relatively long train. 28 Jaunary 2000.

Freightliner loco 47114 is painted in two-tone green livery with Freightliner brandings and named "Freightlinerbulk". The photo was taken in front of the diesel tanks at Toton during the 1998 Open Day. Freightliner have since adopted a new green livery, albeit somewhat brighter than the traditional version.

This one almost caught us out! We assumed the approaching Freightliner had a GM re-engined class 57 on the front...nothing to get too excited about!
Then a half hourly stopping service approached the station from the other direction. Instead of dashing to the far end we casually strolled to the
the nearest platform end...then what roars past the now stationary unit...A CLASS 47! These days 47s on regular Freightliner trains are relatively few
and you can count yourself lucky to see one. Well at least we were able to get a view and a shot of 47150 as it went past and very presentable it looked too!
By the way the place was Cholsey between Didcot and Reading and the train was the Crewe to Southampton liner. Date 20th August 2003.

47270 is we believe a Freightliner 'Heavy Haul' machine that has been working for Freightliner
'Intermodal' during the Ipswich Tunnel closure and would not normally be seen around the
Ipswich area. It is a 'relatively original' member of the class and one of the few
that is still working out its normal operational life. It is also quite possibly
the only British loco to carry a 'Yellow' Nameplate...Cory Brothers 1842-1992...
Pictured on August 31st 2004.

47270 comes off the branch from the docks at Felixstowe with a liner bound for
nearby Ipswich. This loco was not present at the stabling point at Ipswich and we had a hunch
that it might be down the branch so we made our way to Westerfield. We were very
pleased when it put in an appeareance as a real Freightliner 47 on a train is not
easy to see these days. The date is the 31st August 2004.

Freightliner ran 47114 'Freightlinerbulk' in BR green with the addition of their Red Triangle. This loco
has now been withdrawn following a fire but is pictured at Stratford in 2000.

47224 carried on with Freightliner until 2003. It never received full Freightliner livery
continuing to run in plain Trainload Grey with no markings. It is seen here at Stratford in 2000.

A few Freightliner class 47s went into the Green livery that first appeared on class 57s.
Now withdrawn 47258 is seen here entering Kensington Olympia in 2001.

A rather smokey 47279 in Freightliner's Grey livery is seen here at Kensington Olympia in 2001.
These locos used to be an every day sight but now you will struggle to see just one in operation
although Freightliner Intermodal still retain 3 in 2004 for limited use.

47287 was in its last few years a Freightliner machine although it retained Railfreight Distribution colours
without the markings. Like most it is no longer running but carried on we think into 2002.
Seen here at Stratford a year earlier.
