An early morning view of EWS 37405 undergoing a ‘B’ exam at it's home depot. Margam had an allocation of 08 shunters from it's opening in the early 1960's until the early 1980's when it was downgraded from a maintenance depot to a loco inspection point. With the closure of Cardiff Canton in 2004 the 37’s from there were transferred to Margam to be it’s first main line locomotives. Margam, 2 February 2005. Colin Baker (lokfuehrer@ntlworld.com)

EWS Class 37/4 On Tue 30th Jan 2007 major service disruption was caused on the ECML between Edinburgh & Berwick when, while hauled by 66115, fire broke out on board one of the sections of the rear IPA 'Quad' Car Carrier on the 6X38 Washwood Heath - Bathgate car train while south of Drem. Brought to a stand at Drem Junction at approx 06:30, by which time the fire had got a serious hold, fire crews were quickly on the scene. At the height of the blaze, 45 firefighters were on site tackling the fire and also trying to prevent the flames spreading to the very last wagon of the car carrying train - a 2 axle petroleum tank carrying diesel oil for Millerhill.!!! The fire was eventually put out by 10:00, but not before the entire rear 'Quad' (No: 23-87-4375-030-5) & the back two sections of the penultimate 'Quad' (23-87-4375-044-6) were completely gutted along with the 36 brand new Citroen cars which they were carrying. The undamaged portion of 6X38 was uncoupled from the burnt out wagons and sent on it's way to Bathgate at 12:12, while Millerhill dispatched 37406 to collect the damaged wagons and haul them to Millerhill. In this illustration, taken at Drem at 12:32 after the undamaged section of 6X38 was sent on it's way to Bathgate, 37406 'The Saltaire Society' backs onto the damaged wagons for movement, as an exceptional load, to Millerhill.

EWS 37 472 preparing to take the Fort William portion of Caledonian Sleeper forward from Edinburgh. The 37 ran round and coupled to the 5-coach sleeper (comprising of two Mk.3 sleeper coaches, a first class lounge, a staff coach, and a standard class coach) at 04.52 for the 05.11 departure. The train from Euston, standing at Edinburgh Waverley platform 10, was split earlier and the other portion taken away by Res Publica 47 747. During the winter of 1997, Scotrail withdrew the early morning service to Fort William, because of the additional costs of hiring that standard class coach from the Stagecoach group. A fuss was made by the local residents through the Rail Users Consultative Committee, and I am pleased to see that it has had an effect, with the service being reinstated for the summer timetable of 1998. An immaculate Class 37 Syphon seem posed at Crewe Works, the livery is perhaps what the LMSR livery would have been if the company had existed in the 21st Century. An interesting note is how immaculate the engine is, it is mindful to remember that the 'steamers' that we see nowadays would not have looked immaculate, just as this machine will not look this clean again for some while!

CLass 37 seen at Cardiff Central 06 March 2005. This English Electric design is 40 years old and still in use. This service has only been loco hauled due to shortage of DMU's and they are due to be replaced by DMU in the very near future.

This is now regretably a RARITY...an EWS class 37 on any train in and around the London area or in the the S.E. generally.
EWS have over the past few months reduced its 37 use to just 37 4s in S.Wales, Scotland and one or two in the Midlands,
resulting on only about 12 remaining in active service. Here we see 37427 clagging nicely as it approaches Tilehurst
with an Eastleigh to Didcot engineering train on the 18th March 2005. It did not stay long
before heading north again though.

This is now the only occasion when you get a regular opportunity to see an EWS class 37 around London

The very unhealthy sounding EWS Class 37 diesel locomotive 37416 at Fort William Station. The loco had apparently failed half-a-dozen times en route from London with the sleeper service, arriving into Fort William several hours late, and causing a significant delay to the return leg of The Jacobite steam service from Mallaig. One passenger even suggested that they should have used the steam locomotive to rescue the diesel!

OLD LOCOS STILL GOING STRONG AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.
Some locos that still see main line use in 2008 first took to the rails in the late 1950s or early 1960s making them 40 to 50 years old. Quite remarkable considering they were designed in a very different era. 37401 that first entered service in 1965 as D6968 and then 37268 is one of a small number 37 4s that EWS keeps for charters, assisting on sleepers and freight traffic. Although having mostly been out of use during the previous year or so she made a comeback when other locos in the group were unavailable for a charter earlier in the year. Here we see the loco that has recently been re-painted into EWS colours on the back of the 'Grays-Church Elegy Railtour' near Thameshaven on April 26th 2008.

HISTORY. To mark the end of Silverlink Services two 'Silverlink Swansong' charters were organised. This one was

pausing briefly at Stratford before 'growling' off in fine style.

As soon as we heard that a pair of class 37s were on a Serco Test Train in

37416 is certainly knocking up the engine hours recently for whenever an EWS class 37 appears in the SE
it seems to involve this loco. On this occasion it is seen near West Drayton with an ECS move from S.Wales

47733 'Eastern Star' is approached by smartly painted EWS 37426 whilst sitting at Waverley station. The two remained there for a while before the 37 powered off into Calton hill tunnel to return a while later and pass the 47 on the next line, heading out of Waverley. 47732 'Restormel' was also briefly on the scene but retreated without my noticing when the 37 arrived. 7/10/02
