31271-jp.jpg (127852 bytes)

Although 31271 looks somewhat in need of a re-paint, mechanically it was well up to hauling trains at the recent Mid-Hants Diesel Gala in April 2003.

A large number of withdrawn Class 31 locos are stored at Toton sidings near Nottingham. This view shows 31294 in Railfreight Construction livery with unique "Infrastructure" liveried 31116 to the right.

EWS Class 31/1.

EWS's Component Recovery & Distribution Centre at Wigan has become the final resting place for many redundant locomotives. All locomotives that arrive here are destined for stripping of all reusable components, many of which are now obsolete and are costly and/or hard to obtain. These components are then distributed around to be reused on other sevicable examples in order to keep them going. In this view, 31312 & 31432, both of which were OOU at Wigan while it was still in use as a loco depot, now await the inevitable of the new role of Wigan as a CR&DC on Saturday 14th August 1999.

Class 31 diesel loco 31271 was named 'Stratford 1840-2001' as part of the Rail200 Railfest event at the National Railway Museum in York.

This photo was taken immediately after the naming ceremony, as you can see by the reflections of so many photographers. I'm the one crouching below the 'o' of Stratford!

Another shot of the newly named 'Stratford 1840-2001' Class 31 diesel locomotive 31271. Note the "Stratford Sparrow" plate on the cab-side.

This shot was taken at the Rail200 Railfest at the National Railway Museum in York on 31/05/2004. The young girl in the cab is a good illustration of the unprecidented (in my limited experience) access to the footplates and cabs of almost all the locomotives on display, from the LNWR 2-2-2 Cornwall to a Virgin Pendolino.
