This is 'Steam Dreams' Sunny South Special departure to Eastbourne...and I have not got this wrong! It should have been a steam loco
but due to parts of the SE experiencing the worst drought for many years a temporary steam ban has been impossed by
Network Rail in parts of the region. Still FM Rail's 31128 is doing a pretty good job of impersonating a steamer as the train departs
London Victoria on the 10th August 2006.

Two Class 31 locomotives at the old Royal Mail depot adjacent to Bristol Parkway on a three-carraige Network Rail departmental train. 31106 in Fraqonset livery is at the near (western) end while the locomotive at the far end, that I was not able to identify, is in Network Rail's all-over yellow livery. The western end coach is also in NR yellow, while the other two appear to be in unbranded Railtrack blue/green livery.

An FM Rail Class 31 disel locomotive, possibly 31128, running light engine towards the Severn Tunnel waits at a red signal before exiting the westbound goods loop west of Pilning station in South Gloucestershire - the last station in England before the tunnel. This photograph was taken from the bridge at the station with a 3x conversion lense trebbling the power of my camera's already impressive 12x zoom lens giving a focal length of 1296mm.

An FM Rail Class 31 disel locomotive, possibly 31128, running light engine towards Bristol heads east along the South Wales Main Line from Pilning station in South Gloucestershire. Unfortunately I was busy changing the battery on my camera when it passed through the station, meaning this was the only shot I managed to get of it.

Now what chance this happenning 50 years on from when class 31s first appeared? Probably the two oldest
main line approved diesels on the same train in the year 2006...not only that but consecutively numbered
and both earlier 'skinhead' members of the Class . 31106 leads the Serco Test Train with 31105 on the back
through Putney on the 24th April 2006.

This is one of the earlier class 31s which can be distinguished by the rounded
cab roof and are known as 'skinheads'. Fragonsets 31106 sits in the siding
alongside Westbury Station on the 22nd October 2004 and dating from the
late 1950's make its one on the oldest main line locos on the network.

Both of these locos 31128 and 20001 date from the 1950s. The class 31 is
still a working loco for Fragonset whlist the class 20 retired to preservation
some years ago.
