The concept of coupling two TGV units was realized from the beginning of the high-speed-service in France. The DB got the same idea for their ICE-trains about 15 years later. April 1984

When the TGVs enter or leave this station, each engine has its pantograph up. This train is just entering Lyon Part-Dieu for a short stop. April 1984

The TGV double unit 78 / 05 leaving Lyon Part-Dieu in southbound direction. Maybe Lyon-Perrache, Marseille / Nice, Avignon / Nimes, Grenoble or the Alpes, but on normal tracks (April 1984). Today the TGVs can continue on a high-speed line in southbound direction, as far as I know until Valence for the moment.
