This is a view of the command used to lift the 1500 Volt DC pantograph(s).
To lift them, the driver puts a special key in the hole and selects the
desired position.
There are 4 positions (from right to left):
- 0 : The neutral position, the 2 pantos of the locomotive are down.
- N : This lifts and keeps in that position the special DC-pantograph.
- NS : Like the "N" position, but it lifts also the AC panto. Under DC current
the driver must absolutely lift 2 pantographs during starting up, because the
current intensity reaches big values (Ohm's law) and there is a risk of burning
the catenary. When the train runs about 10km/h, the driver can go back to
the "N" position. This will put the second pantograph down.
- S : This position isn't frequently used. It allows to use the AC pantograph
with a DC catenary in case the normal DC pantograph isn't working properly.
Please note that the command key can be taken off from the hole only in the
"0" position.
Photo taken from a video film of mine, that's why the quality is poorest than
with a "normal" photo.
