SNCF This car is the prototype of the Corail+ renovation. It has two different liveries on its sides, one is the definitive one, and the other is this one. This car was chosen because it has both first and second class, so that the compagny can make some commercial tests for the new inside-equipement. Refurbished 1st-class Corail compartment-car (A10u) of SNCF.
This car is part of the second order for Corail compartment-cars (VU-78). It features 1 more compartment than A9u (VU-75) cars. Yet, the carbody is the same as that for 8-seat, 2nd-class compartment cars, with 2.867m in width, instead of 2.825m. It was refurbished in the mid-90s under the "Corail +" program.

Refurbished 1st-class Corail compartment-car (A9u) of SNCF-GL ("Corail Plus"), seen in Paris-Austerlitz.
This car belongs to very first order for Corail compartment-cars (VU-75). Refurbishment took place in the late-90s, under the "Corail Plus" program. Paris-Austerlitz. 30th December 2003. P.L.Guillemin (plguillemin@yahoo.fr) |
Refurbished 2nd-class Open-room Corail (B11tu) car ("Corail Plus"), seen in Paris-Austerlitz.
This car was refurbished in the late-90s, under the "Corail Plus" program. Sadly, it has retained its B11 arrangement, with a seat pitch as little as 870mm... Paris-Austerlitz 30th December 2003. P.L.Guillemin (plguillemin@yahoo.fr) |

Refurbished Bar/2nd-class (Open room) Corail car (B5rtux) of SNCF-GL.
This car was refurbished in 1997/1998 under the "Corail +" program. It is seen quite surprinsingly on Night Ski Train 5878 Evian-Paris Austerlitz, upon arrival. One can notice that the Bar accommodation is advertised in a far more discreet way than pre-refurbishment... Paris-Austerlitz. 03rd March 2002. Interiors of a Refurbished Bar/2nd-class Corail car (B5rtux) of SNCF-GL.
This car was refurbished in 1997/1998 under the "Corail +" program. This is the Lounge/Bar area, which accounts for half of this car. Sadly, the counter which one can see on the right was closed, as this car was diagrammed merely to provide extra capacity on Corail 1604 (Strasburg-Paris Est)... 25th December 2001. Dying breed: interiors of a Refurbished Bar/2nd-class Corail car (B5rtux) of SNCF.
This car was refurbished in 1997/1998 under the "Corail +" program. This pic is looking towards the counter, which was unsurprisingly closed, as this car was diagrammed on a Dijon-Rheims TER service. By 2006, the bar area will have gone, given that Région Champagne-Ardennes is to fund a further refurbishment, in line with TER standards. Dijon-ville. 27th December 2003. This car was refurbished in 1997/1998 under the "Corail +" program. This pic is looking towards the sofas and the 2nd-class saloon. Ambiance looks rather dark, typical of the greyish 90s... The largest-distance TER service in France:
TER 17710 (Marseille St Charles--->Paris Gare de Lyon), 862 km, 8hrs 27min and 26 stops !!! 2nd-class (Open-room)/Bar "Corail Plus" car (B5rtux, VTU-75 or 78). Notwithstanding the distance, catering facilities are not in use. Since 2001/2002, i.e. when bar accommodation was withdrawn from all Corail services, B5rtux have faced gloomy prospects: scrapyard or TER services, primarily those of Champagne-Ardennes, Bourgogne, Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Avignon-Centre. 4th September 2005.

2nd-class (Open-room)/Bar "Corail Plus" car (B5rtux, VTU-75 or 78), seen in the consist of Auto-train 24540/1 (Narbonne--->Calais, via Limoges).
While this service runs with SNCF rolling-stock and staff, it is actually operated and solely marketed (as "French Motorail") by Raileurope UK. Actually one of the very, very few opportunities to see B5rtux cars used as catering-cars, as this fleet has either gone through the torch or run on TER services, since the withdrawal of Bar accommodation in 2001/2002. On this service, the 2nd-class seating area (44 seats) is not reservable as seated-accommodation, meaning that passengers (whether travelling in Sleeping or Couchettes-cars) can use it as they want. Toulouse-Matabiau. 25th June 2005.

Refurbished 2nd-class Corail compartment-car (B9ux) ("Corail Plus"), seen in Paris-Austerlitz.
This car was refurbished in the late-90s, under the "Corail Plus" program. While it had originally been built as a B11u car (VU-80 or 82), it lost 2 compartments in 2000 to make room for:
