Madrid-Atocha station, seen in September 1979.
Old Class 8000 cars under the Trainshed and ex-MZA signalling. These were the days... The pic was taken from a point where now stands a buffer for one of the Westernmost tracks of Puerta de Atocha. Madrid-Atocha station, seen in its last months of pre-AVE life.
These were the days, with ex-MZA signalling and the Trainshed accommodating trains... Even reliveried by "Estrella" standards, Class 8000 cars belong to other times, let alone the Class 276, still in original livery. The pic was taken from a point now forming part of the front platform of Puerta de Atocha. This station closed on 24th September 1988 in order to be rebuilt (almost) from scratch as Puerta de Atocha, under the Madrid-Sevilla HSL project. 05th January 1988. Madrid-Atocha station, seen at some time in Spring 1989 during its reconstruction into Madrid-Puerta de Atocha, under the Madrid-Sevilla HSL project.
This pic is looking towards the South, opposite the old station building. While that station had closed on 24th September 1988, ex-MZA signalling and old catenary masts were still in place in Spring 1989, but tracks were already being lifted. The pic was taken from a point now forming part of a UIC-gauge platform of Madrid-Puerta de Atocha. One can see a Class 440 EMU (in blue/yellow original livery) in the background, running on the tracks for Madrid-Atocha Cercanias. Spring 1989. Madrid-Atocha station, seen at some time during its reconstruction into Madrid-Puerta de Atocha, under the Madrid-Sevilla HSL project, probably in 1990.
The ex-MZA Trainshed no longer accommodated any train and was being converted into a tropical garden. One can see the foundations for the pillars due to support the new trainshed, very much inspired from Ancient Egypt...
