RENFE - Spain The huge border station of Canfranc in the Pyrenees mountains had a French (standard gauge) and a Spanish (broad gauge) side. Since a derailment in the 1970s French trains no longer reach Canfranc, and Spanish trains only use a side platform. This used to be the main entrance (to the tunnel towards the main building). Apart from the main station there are more buildings (for freight, maintenance of locomotives, etcetera). Canfranc, 14-05-2015 Digital photo by Marco van Uden |

Canfranc, June 1998. The platform for Spanisch broad gauge trains on the west side of the station building, still being used. The afternoon DMU brings some life into this sleeping beauty.

Canfranc, June 1998. Although being a three-car DMU of considerable length, it looks ridiculously small in front of the huge station building.

Canfranc, June 1998. The main hall under the central cupola of the station building. The abandoned ticket counters look like wooden confessionals.

Canfranc, June 1998. Inside the deserted Hotel Internacional, part of the station building. The roof is leaking, ceilings and wallpapers are falling down

Canfranc, June 1998. The staircase of the Hotel Internacional. The parquet and ceilings are rotten, you have to watch out not to break through.
