Dual system (Talgo and CAF) gauge-changer in Olmedo, on the Madrid-Valladolid/Medina del Campo forthcoming HSL.
This gauge-changer was built in 2002 in an attempt to accommodate both Talgo-RD and CAF-BRAVA competing systems. Each system is mounted on a moving structure, so that one can easily shift them. Unfortunately, that dual-system gauge-changer does not allow for the operation of mixed formations, viz. using both systems in the same formation... The system ready for use on this pic is that of Talgo. CAF-BRAVA system stands folded on the right. Both systems will be used at 15kph by variable-gauge trainsets, although these have been cleared for 30kph. 2002. Gauge-changer (Talgo-only) of Cordoba-Valchillon, seen looking towards Iberic-gauge tracks.
This gauge-changer dates back from 1992. Up to 10 services use each way this facility on a daily basis (Talgo 200 Madrid-Malaga, Altaria Madrid-Algeciras). Cordoba-Valchillon. 05th June 2004. Taboadela gauge changer on the Madrid-Galicia high speed line seen from a Talgo Avril (Renfe S106) AVE service.
This service is running at this point on the 1668 mm gauge track, and will change to 1435 mm at the Taboadela gauge changer.
To the right the current 1435 mm single track to Ourense can be seen. Until the high speed line is complete with dobule 1435 mm track, between Taboadela and Ourense both gauges merge on a double-gauge single track.

The T on the signal indicates that the gauge changer is ready for Talgo compositions. If the gauge changer was reafy for a CAF composition, a C would appear instead.

Talgo gauge-changer of Portbou, seen looking towards France and standard-gauge tracks (1435mm-4ft8in).
The "Limite RENFE" sideboard still stands as an ultimate warning addressed to Spanish drivers... This is the oldest gauge-changer used in revenue service. It was built in 1969 and daily accommodates 4-5 services each way. Portbou. 12th October 2003.
