Madrid-Atocha station, seen on its very last day of pre-AVE life.
Until its very end, this station retained its Railway Museum aspect, with old ex-MZA signalling. One can notice the Class 440, still in original livery, while Class 8000 cars had been reliveried to the "Estrella" standards. One can also see the newly-built Atocha-Cercanias station (for commuter traffic), on the right. The pic was taken from a point now forming part of the standard-gauge tracks of Puerta de Atocha. In the evening of that day, this station was closed in order to be rebuilt (almost) from scratch as Puerta de Atocha, under the Madrid-Sevilla HSL project. 24th September 1988.
