AVE-100 set of RENFE-AVE, seen bound for Madrid-Puerta de Atocha, between Puertollano and Ciudad Real.

While this service runs on the Madrid-Sevilla HSL (25kV-50Hz AC; 1435mm-4ft8in), one can spot a single-track conventional line (3kV DC; 1668mm-5ft6in) further left.

This is actually the Manzanares-Ciudad Real-Puertollano-Merida-Badajoz line.
At this place, it only accommodates for a handful of Ciudad Real-Badajoz DMUs and a few Freighters to/from Puertollano.

Under the original NAFA project (1985), this conventional route would have been dual-tracked and re-aligned for 200 km/h-125pmh, still with 3kV and iberic-gauge.

Only in 1988/1989 did the Spanish Government decide to build a genuine HSL in that area, as a result of its preference for standard-gauge...
