Madrid-Atocha station, seen in its last months of pre-AVE life.
From the left to the right:
These were the days, with ex-MZA signalling and the Trainshed accommodating trains... The pic was taken from a point now forming part of the front platform of Puerta de Atocha. This station closed on 24th September 1988 in order to be rebuilt (almost) from scratch as Puerta de Atocha, under the Madrid-Sevilla HSL project. 09th January 1988. Estrella 344 "Media Luna" (Irun-Algesiras), seen in its penultimate summer of running.
This train, well under life support, is seen halted on a siding, so as to clear the single-track for Talgo 201 Madrid-Bilbao/Hendaye, which one can see on the right, hauled with a Class 352. In 2004, one can enjoy another kind of encounter in Fontioso, namely Talgo 201 passing AVE-102 sets under transfer from Ribavellosa to Las Matas. Fontioso. August 2000. Madrid-Atocha station, seen on its very last day of pre-AVE life.
Until its very end, this station retained its Railway Museum aspect, with old ex-MZA signalling. One can notice a Class 321, in original livery. The Class 352 Talgo Diesel is diagrammed on the Madrid-Almeria/Granada service, leaving between 02.00pm and 03.00pm. This loco got new, smaller, yet debatable front glasses... The pic was taken from a point now forming part of the standard-gauge tracks of Puerta de Atocha. In the evening of that day, this station was closed in order to be rebuilt (almost) from scratch as Puerta de Atocha, under the Madrid-Sevilla HSL project. 24th September 1988.
