T2 Sleeping-car of RENFE (WL36x-5400), seen on the Estrella "Sol de Levante" Irun-Alicante.
This car was reliveried to the "Largo recorrido" standards in the early/mid-90s, and got the "Grandes Lineas" logo in the late-90s. WLT2 have always been priced as first-class only accommodation in Spain ("Single" & "Double"), while such cars have been marketed as "Special" and "T2" accommodation in other countries. Irun. Sleeping-car WL36x-5400 (T2) of RENFE, seen on the Estrella "Costa Brava" Madrid-Cerbère, upon its long turnaround (10am to 07.15pm) in Portbou.
This car is one of the very few WL36x-5400s which has retained its original CIWL livery. Yet, the Preferente branding and the Grandes Lineas logo have been applied. While this car is priced as Preferente (either Single or Double), the car in the background (a WL26x-7100) is marketed as Gran Clase accommodation (either Single or Double). One can appreciate the actual condition of the carbody, as well as the difference between the UIC and RENFE numbering patterns... Portbou. 12th October 2003. Interiors of a "Preferente" Sleeping-car of RENFE (WL36x-5400).
This is actually the lower compartment of a T2 type car. These have always been marketed as 1st-class (then Preferente) accommodation in Spain, unlike in France and Belgium. 02nd October 2003.
