EuroCity 72/3 «Catalan-Talgo» (Barcelona - Genèe) in 1991, stopping
in Port Bou before changing to normal gauge. You can nicely see the
riveted aluminium construction of this train.

back along the train while it rolls slowly through the gauge changing
assembly. Another nice reference for rivet-counters. ;)

«Catalan-Talgo» (Renfe Talgo III RD) in 1991, being pushed
through the gauge changing facility in Port Bou. As this train
has no door blocking, it is possible to watch the gauge changing
process from an open door. The broken sign "Limite de Renfe" on
the right warns the driver that it's not a good idea to proceed
with a wide gauge locomotive. After a brief stop, a SNCF locomotive
pulls the train out on the other side.

Talgo III RD - Catalan Talgo Barcelona - Montpellier. December 09
History on wheels...
Outside view of the Catalan Talgo train, the last 3rd generation Talgo train on service and probably the last surviving original ex-TEE train after 40 years of international connections. Smooth ride, specially on the French side, but it seems that Renfe is not taking pride in keeping the train in proper conditions, specially on the outside. The two white shapes are the old logo of 'Grandes Lineas Renfe'.

History on wheels...
Almost everything remains the same as day one. The indicator doesn't show all the stops on the French side, and neither shows the two stops on both sides of the border.

Second class interior. These seats were added in the 80s when the train wasn't TEE anymore and so it didn't have to be 1st class only. The seats are the same as in Talgo 4 sets, but in brown. Other than that, the decoration is exactly the same, and there's lots of legroom.

Detail of the 2nd class interior. Flowery decoration, unique to Talgo III RD; other Talgo III sets didn't have these little touches of luxury.

2nd class interior of the Talgo III RD (Catalan-Talgo).
This train was originally 1st class only; some cars have
been rebuilt into 2nd class with more seats, but still
keeping the old-fashioned brownish colours.

old-fashioned curtains :)
