The railway ferry Kronprins Frederik at Great Belt on its way Nyborg, august 1982. The ferry had 4 tracks and unlike the older ferries, two trains could enter the ferry simultaneously, making the loading of the ferry faster. 3 of these ferries were build. The journey took 1 hour and only took trains. Cars had since 1957 their own crossing between Halsskov and Knudshoved a bit north of the railway crossing. Today, the Great Belt Bridge, one of the longest bridges of the world, has replaced both car and railway ferries. Photo by Lars Bohn. |
In over 100 years the railway traffic between east- and west-Denmark has gone by railway ferries across "Storebælt". Here you see the three newest DSB railway ferries - the so-called INTERCITY ferries - named "Kronprins Frederik" (build 1979-81), "Dronning Ingrid" (build 1978-80) and "Prins Joachim" (build 1979-80). In the background you see "Sprogø" - one of the car ferries. On the first of july 1997 will a new bridge and tunnel between Zealand and Fuhnen be opened for the railway traffic, and then the traffic with the Intercity ferries will stop - and an era in the danish railway-history is over.

Denmark-Germany For now the ferries between Roedby and Puttgarden are safe. Will there be a tunnel in this spot in 10 years? Two Danish IC3 trainsets enter the ferry at Puttgarden. Puttgarden, 29-06-2014 Digital photo by Marco van Uden |
Two railroad ferries at Ellsinore. Here, the international trains for Sweden and Norway were sailed to Helsingborg in Sweden until the opening of "Øresundsbron", the bridge to Sweden between Copenhagen and Malmö, some 40 kilometres further south. These ferries were much smaller than those that crossed the Great Belt further west. They only had one railway track and they also took cars. Unlike the ferries at Great Belt, who turned after leaving the harbour, these sailed both directions equally well. Crossing time was 20 minutes and 3 ferries crossed each hour. There is still ferry crossing to Sweden at Ellsinore, but today passenger trains uses the new bridge. Photo taken app. 1981 by Lars Bohn. |
From Korsør railway ferry harbour. It was a cold winter that year. The ferries in the background are elder ferries that in 1985 only rarely (if ever) were used for passenger trains. Photo taken by Lars Bohn 1985 |

A view at the ferry station Rødby Færge 21. march 1989, the clock is 10.14. DSB MZ 1444 is heading the "Scandia Express" out of the station, whereas several locos class MX and MZ series IV is standing at the depot. In the background a class MT is flatbed-waggons carrying "Volvo"-containers.
In the left side, the Deutsche Bundesbahn ferry "F/S Theodor Heuss" is seen in the ferrybed, whereas the DSB "M/F Danmark" is to the right. Most of this is now history, as the Great Belt link has taken over most of the international trains and the ferries has been replaced with faster and more modern ones.
