The building site for the new underground station Bonner Wall seen from the
south side on 22 April 2006. On this weekend the parts of the tunneling machine
"Tosca", which will drill the eastern tube towards the main station, were lifted
into the starting pit. For this purpose an 800 t lattice girder crane (on the
right) and a 500 t truck-mounted crane (in the background) were used. In front
of the latter, the center shield (Mittelschuß) of the tunneling machine is
visible, it was delivered in this position (with the thrust cylinders pointing
upwards) by a low-loading truck. Both cranes will work together to rotate it,
then the 800 t crane will lift it into the pit. The startup of the new
underground line is planned for 2010.

The excavation for the new underground station Bonner Wall in the south of
Cologne seen looking onto the southern end on 3 December 2006. On the right a
ramp will lead to the end stations Marktstraße on the surface. The sheet
pile wall indicates where the branch towards the Rhine (for line 16, 5 and 17
will run to the Marktstraße) will be added later. The narrow gauge tracks
coming down the ramp run into the western (right) respectively eastern (left)
tunnel to supply the tunneling machines with the concrete segments for the
lining. The round basis is used to turn the formwork carriage for the so-called
C shell (a C-shaped shell of concrete which is fit into the tunnel at the spots
where the lining will be opened laterally to build the stations). The bridge
visible at the top carries the freight train line crossing the Rhine in the
south of the city. The startup of the new underground line is planned for 2010.

The underground station Breslauer Platz/Hbf next to the main station ("Hbf"
is the abbreviation for "Hauptbahnhof", the German word for "main station") in
Cologne seen on 3 December 2006. For the construction of the new underground
line through the city centre, which branches off at the main station, the
station has to be reconstructed completely to become a junction station with
three platform tracks. This is the end of the so called Ursula-Tunnel (named
after it's godmother Ursula Schramma, the wife of the mayor of Cologne), which
will lead trains coming from the new line into the station. It was drilled
between 11 July and 9 September 2006 by the tunneling machine "Carmen" and is
260 metres long, ending at the Kurt-Hackenberg-Platz south of the main station,
where five tunnels (two single-tracked ones coming from Breslauer Platz, two
single-tracked ones from Bonner Wall in the south, and an already existing
double tracked tunnel coming from Dom/Hbf) will meet in an underground building.
Note the sign above the tunnel entrance with the words "Glück auf" (the
traditional salute of the miners expressing the hope always to return to the
surface safely) and the date 22 June 2006 (the day of the tunnel christening),
and the cabinet with a figurine of the Holy Barbara (the patron saint of the
miners) further right. The startup of the new underground line is planned for
2010.

The ramp of the narrow gauge line running from the freight station Köln
Bonntor through the superstore site into the tunnel of the new underground line,
seen on 22 April 2006. In the dark, the tracks turn to the left, towards the
starting pit (which will become the station Bonner Wall later), while the ramp
towards the station Marktstraße (where the trams will leave the
underground) is on the right. This line, with a gauge of about 900 mm, will be
used to bring the concrete segments for the lining of the tunnel to the
tunneling machines. The excavated ground will be transported through pipes
(mixed with bentonite supension) to the seperation plant at the station Bonntor.
The startup of the new underground line is planned for 2010.

This is a model of the two tunneling machines "Tosca" and "Rosa", which are
currently drilling the new underground line in Cologne. It is exhibited at the
information desk at the Alter Markt, the picture was taken on 27 March
2007. On the left is the shield with the cutting wheel, on the right are the
tail modules. The latter run on the lining, using tilted wheels which are
clearly visible here. The grey pipe is used for the ventilation. The switch at
the plinth of the showcase activates an electric motor which actuates the
cutting wheel. The startup of the new underground line is planned for 2010.

On 22 April 2006, the parts of the tunneling machine "Tosca", which will drill
the eastern tube of the new underground line, were lifted into the starting pit
at the station Bonner Wall. This is the center shield (Mittelschuß), the
heaviest part with a weight of 176 t. The front end (right) will be attached to
the front shield (Schneidenschuß) containing the cutting wheel, while at
the rear end the visible thrust cylinders will be surrounded by the tailskin
(Schildschwanz) later. When this part was delivered by a low-loading truck, it
was placed on the yellow supports on the left with the thrust cylinders
pointing upwards. In the picture a 500 t truck-mounted crane (left) and a 800 t
lattice girder crane (right) are working together to rotate it, later the 800 t
crane will lift it into the pit.

at the station Bonner Wall. This is the center shield (Mittelschuß), the
heaviest part with a weight of 176 t. The view onto the rear end shows the 14
pairs of thrust cylinders placed at the outline, and some smaller cylinders
between them which will obviously actuate the tailskin (Schildschwanz). The
latter will surround the area behind the center shield, where the segment lining
will be installed. The four large mounts at the frame inside the center shield
seem to be intended for the erector, which lifts the segments into their
position.

The tail modules of the tunneling machine "Tosca", which will drill the eastern
tube of the new underground line, seen from the front end on 22 April 2006. On
this day, the parts of the shield were lifted into the starting pit at the
station Bonner Wall. The parts of the shield had to be assembled in front of the
western tube, as the opening in the cover of the pit does not span the eastern
half. In the lower left corner a part of the front shield (Schneidenschuß)
is visible, later the center shield (Mittelschuß) was placed behind it.
After completion the whole shield had to be shifted to the eastern tube. The
tail modules on the right belong to "Rosa", the other tunneling machine which
will drill the western tube. The parts of its shield were lifted into the pit
after "Tosca" was completed.

The tail modules of the tunneling machine "Tosca", which will drill the eastern
tube of the new underground line, seen from the rear end on 22 April 2006.
These modules contain several devices neccessary for the operation of the
machine, for example slurry pumps for the bentonite suspension, the segment
magazine and ventilation pipes. The modules wheels are tilted, as they will run
on the segmental lining. The narrow gauge train which brings the concrete
segments enters the modules on the lower level.

to remove the rest, but this was not done during the demonstration as some
sparks might have done harm to the spectators.
