Even the sky was crying when the last four eight-axled tramcars of the
Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe (KVB) were lined up at Neumarkt for the final
parade to the West depot, in the evening of 22 July 2006. The picture was taken
from the rear of 3764, from left to right we see the tail of 3209 and the heads
of 3205 and 3230. The destination indicators show "Braunsfeld -
Melatengürtel", which is in fact not the name of a stop. Braunsfeld is the
district where the depot is located, and Melatengürtel is the street
leading from the stop Aachener Str./Gürtel (last stop before the depot)
northwards. After the parade, 3764 went to the Thielenbruch museum to which it
belongs for several years. 3209 went to Thielenbruch, too, but later it was
brought to the main workshop at Weidenpesch to be scrapped. 3205 went to
the workshop directly, while 3230 went to the Merheim depot on this evening (but
it will also be scrapped at the workshop soon).

The cab of tramcar 3764 of the Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe (KVB), seen during a
stop at Neumarkt on 22 July 2006. On this day the farewell of the eight-axled
tramcars was celebrated with special trains from Neumarkt to Junkersdorf and to
Poll, and a parade of four cars from Neumarkt to the West depot in the evening.
The long traktion/brake lever on the left actuates the switches mechanically, it
is the reason why the cars of 3700 and 3800 series are called
"Knüppelwagen" ("cudgel cars"). The lever on the driver's console controls
the solenoid brake (disc brakes actuated by solenoids) and the electromagnetic
rail brake. The former is neccessary to bring the car to a complete stop (the
electro-dynamic brake does not work at very low speeds), and as parking brake
for short stops. The latter is used for a strong deceleration in case of an
emergency. The long lever on the right actuates the mechanical parking brake
which is used for longer stops. In the background a six-axled work car (which
is consisting of two foreparts of eight-axled cars, arranged back-to-back) is
passing by.

The auxiliary driver's console in the rear of tramcar 3764, seen on 22 July
2006. On this day the farewell of the eight-axled tramcars was celebrated with
special trains from Neumarkt to Junkersdorf and to Poll, and a parade of four
cars from Neumarkt to the West depot in the evening. As the eight axled cars are
one-way vehicles, they do not have a rear cab, only this small console. On the
right a traction/brake lever can be attached, it has six positions.
"Schnell-Bremsen" ("quick braking") possibly activates the electromagnetic rail
brake, while "Halten" ("stop") and "Lösen" ("release") should relate to the
solenoid brake. "Fahren 1" ("drive 1"), "Fahren 2" and "Fahren 3" are obviously
running notches. Moreover there is a switch ("Richt-Anzeiger") and a control
lamp ("Blinker") for the blinkers, and a push-button for the emergency brake
("Notbremse").

Tramcar 3764 of the Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe (KVB) arrives at Eupener
Straße as special train from Junkersdorf to Neumarkt on 22 July 2006. On
this day the farewell of the eight-axled tramcars was celebrated with special
trains from Neumarkt to Junkersdorf and to Poll, and a parade of four cars from
Neumarkt to the West depot in the evening. 3764 belongs to the fleet of the
Thielenbruch museum for several years, and it is the last remaining so called
"Knüppelwagen" ("cudgel cars", because of the long traction/brake lever
which actuates the switches mechanically) in Cologne. The other three cars
involved, belonging to 3200 series (with electrically actuated switches), were
used for regular rush-hour services until now, but will soon be scrapped.

(note that the line number "6" was already replaced by an "E"), this farewell
sign was placed in the rear window. Sorry for the bad quality, it was already
a bit dark.
