DB 75 122 (?) Basel Photo Jacques WILLIGENS (j.willigens@gmail.com)
This is a DB locomotive of the type 75 101 to 302, ex Baden VI b, together with a Plan D coach of the NS. As the coach is already marked as 2nd class the photo was taken after 1956, but before 1962 when the last VI b of the DB were retired. The combination of a small German tank locomotive with an international train in a Swiss station is interesting; the Rhine bridge had a limit of 17 tons per axle which meant that trains had to be moved between Basel Badischer Bahnhof and Basel SBB by lightweight locomotives. The electrification between Mannheim and Basel was completed in november 1956, and perhaps the bridge was improved at that time as well, which would mean that the photo was taken in 1956. Inside the hall you can see another steam locomotive, and in background a train of Swiss light steel coaches. Today the same view wouldn't be possible because a big post office building was built over the tracks. - tbk
