panels_esa.jpg (113623 bytes)

Some new DB station panels for timetables, information etc. which are to be installed at Eisenach station. This is a part of the new DB Corporate Identity.
The green car in the background belongs to Bundesgrenzschutz (German federal border police) which is in charge of protecting rail operations as well since German re-unification. Then former West German Bahnpolizei (railway police) and former East German Transportpolizei (transportation police) merged into the Bundesgrenzschutz which was already in charge of protecting the (West) German borders and airports.

Picture taken on July 4th, 1998 on the occasion of "Bahnhofsfest '98" (local railway station festival).

Differenz.jpg (28171 bytes)

16 February 1997, station: Lauenförde-Beverungen, Germany
An obviously restored historical inscription `Differenz der Ortszeit gegen Berlinerzeit ,,30 Minuten'' ' (difference of local time vs. Berlin time: 30 minutes).
Such inscriptions at railway stations were common before the introduction of the Central European Time as common legal time in Germany in 1893. The Prussian railways operated uniformly with Berlin time (other German state railways used the local time of their respective capitals), and the timetables were also published on this basis, while the locally used time everywhere otherwise was the local mean solar time.

16. Februar 1997, Bf. Lauenförde-Beverungen, Deutschland

DSMI_sign.jpg (85225 bytes)

Writing in the dark underpass of the stop Schmilka-Hirschmühle (between Bad Schandau and the Czech border). Today it says "Zu den Zügen in der Richtung nach Schöna" - Schöna, the last station before the border, is the end station of all S1 trains. You can see a bit of the old inscription shining through: "Richtung Bodenbach" - long ago, even local trains went from here to Bodenbach (= Decin hl. n.); today only EuroCity, night trains and a few regional trains on the weekend, but they don't stop in Schmilka-Hirschmühle any more. On the right you see a more recent addition: a sign that warns you not to get too close to the track. By the way, Schmilka is on the other side of the Elbe, connected to the station by a ferry; Hirschmühle is an old mill, of which only a ruin is left. The stops in this area are very popular among hikers every weekend.

Sebnitz_Ankunft.jpg (91972 bytes)

The remains of old arrival timetables at Sebnitz (Sachsen). Today there are only trains from and to Bautzen and Bad Schandau; when this timetable was valid, some trains also went to Hoyerswerda. You can also see that this line was not any faster back then .... 2001-02-16.

Riesen1.jpg (53995 bytes)

12 May 2001, station: Pforzheim Hbf, Germany
Some time ago, Deutsche Bahn has equipped its larger stations with "tin giants" like these, which are meant to offer various kinds of information in an eye-catching way. This yellow version here contains a town map.

12. Mai 2001, Bf. Pforzheim Hbf, Deutschland

Rade-anzeiger.jpg (91598 bytes)

Old train destination indicator in Radebeul Ost, announcing the train via Dresden-Neustadt, Dresden Hbf and Pirna to Schöna (which is approaching, as you see). This indicator works simply by switching lights on and off, it only allows a few destinations and was very common on small stations throughout East Germany. 2001-01-27.
