Koeln Weiden West Station on the line Cologne-Aachen was build for the soccer world championship in 2006. It connects the tram line that passes by the stadium and the urban railways (S-Bahn). The idea was to make better use of the limited capacity of the trams: now inbound and outbound trams can be used to travel to the stadium. There is one platform with two tracks for the railway trains and four (!) tracks for the trams. (J.C.Stiller stiller@brain.uni-freiburg.de) |

The new S-Bahn (suburban railway) stop Köln-Weiden West on the western edge
of Cologne (located on the
upgraded
line Cologne-Düren) seen from the south side on 25 March 2006. The
platform between the tracks is nearly finished, even the roof is already
visible. The staircases under the bridge are in the works, as well as the
parking site in the foreground. At the tram station on the right, two service
buildings and the lamp posts on the platforms can be seen.

detailed view shows the central part of the platform with the accesses. Two wide
staircases will lead up from the ground level to the intermediate level, passing
under the bridge of the southern track. From there two staircases lead up to the
platform, one heading to the left and one to the right. An elevator will be
located between the staircases, passing nonstop through the intermediate level.
The things hanging under the roof are lamps.

of Cologne (located on the

was taken into service. The station was more or less finished on that day,
except for the elevator which looked finished but was not yet operational. On
the right a tram consisting of two low-floor cars is waiting at the tram
station.

indicate that this is a non-smoking station. Note that the stairs are very wide,
as heavy traffic to the soccer stadium is to be expected sometimes.

The new S-Bahn (suburban railway) stop Köln-Weiden West on the western edge
of Cologne (located on the

service. This is the intermediate level, on the left the stairs lead down to the
ground (where the tram station and the parking site are located). One of the
staircases leading up to the platform is visible in the background, the opposite
one is not in the picture. The elevator (which was not yet operational) passes
the intermediate level without a stop, but there is a door obviously intended
for rescue operations and maintenance. Note that the stairs are very wide, as
heavy traffic to the soccer stadium is to be expected sometimes.
