Köln/Bonn Flughafen
Terminus station of Köln-Bonn Flughafen. This is an open-cut station with skylights to allow natural lighting. This station has dual central platforms. Taken Friday 24 February 2006. © 2006 Josh Hanz (josh_hanz@hotmail.com) |
The northern emergency exit of the tunnel leading to the new station at the
Köln Bonn Airport, seen on 12 October 2003. The tunnel is 4210 m long,
with the station in the middle, so there is one emergency exit in the northern
part and one in the southern (as new tunnels must have exits at least every
1000 m). Note the door with the air intake, the exit itself will be kept at a
higher pressure than the tunnel, so that smoke from the tunnel can not enter
the staircase. At this day the tunnel was open to visitors, you could walk from
this exit to the station through the tunnel. Scheduled operation is planned to
start in June 2004.

The station Köln/Bonn Airport seen on 13 June 2004, the first day of
regular service. This is the view from the central gangway above the tracks
(connection between the platforms and access to the emergency exits) onto the
southern end. The access area with the exit to Terminal 1 is hidden in the dark
background. At the outer tracks 1 and 4 the platform is 76 cm above the rails,
these are used for the class 425 EMUs of the RE 8 line. Tracks 2 and 3 have 96
cm platform height and are intended for the S 13, allowing a stepless entrance
into the class 423 S-Bahn (urban trains) EMUs. But sometimes track 3 is blocked
by an ICE which comes from Berlin Ostbahnhof and reverses here, then the S 13
to Troisdorf uses track 4.

The station Köln/Bonn Airport seen on 13 June 2004, the first day of
regular service. This is the view from the elevated street next to Terminal 2,
above the northern end of the station. The central part is covered by this
glass roof, which lets a lot of light inside (note that the platform area is as
bright as the scenery outside). The southern access area is located under the
elevated street in the background and the area behind it. Behind the small
yellow bus on the lower street, the exit with a temporary roof is visible. The
way from there to the corner of Terminal 1, which is visible at the left edge
of the picture, is by now not covered. In front of the elevated street is the
bus stop of Terminal 1.

Two station signs of Köln/Bonn Airport assembled together in a single
Picture, seen on 13 June 2004, the first day of regular service. They are
labeled with "Köln/Bonn Flughafen" (german) and "Köln/Bonn Airport"
(english) in alternating order. In timetable information the german version is
used.

The new station at the Köln Bonn Airport seen from the northern end on 12
October 2003. The two tracks coming out of the tunnel fork into four tracks
here. The inner tracks are intended for the S-Bahn (urban trains, platform
height 96 cm), the outer ones are for RE and ICE trains (platform height 76
cm). The walls between the inner and the outer tracks end where the platforms
begin. Signals and catenaries are still missing, it is planned to begin
scheduled operation in June 2004.

The new station at the Köln Bonn Airport seen looking into the tunnel from
the northern platform end on 12 October 2003. In the middle are the tracks for
the S-Bahn (urban trains), the tracks for RE and ICE trains can be seen at the
edges of the picture.

The new station at the Köln Bonn Airport seen from the northern end of the
western platform on 12 October 2003. Above the eastern platform the northern
access level is visible, with stairs leading down on the left and escalators on
the right. There will also be elevators, note the rectangular holes in the
access level and in the platform. The metal bar next to the hole seems to be
intended to hold the catenary which is still missing. This access level is in
fact the lowest floor of the Terminal 2, in the best case you have to walk
about 100 m from the plane to the train.

The new station at the Köln Bonn Airport seen from the northern end on 12
October 2003. Although it is located under the ground, the central part of the
station will have much daylight through a 156 m long glass roof. The access
levels are located at the ends, a bit away from the bright area, but near to
the terminals. While the northern one is integrated into the new Terminal 2,
the southern one will probably connected to the south-western corner of the
Terminal 1, which is some meters away from the station. The diagonal pillars
visible behind the station belong to a street leading to the airport. This
Picture also shows that the inner tracks for the S-Bahn (urban trains) have
these "hollow" platform edges (while the outer ones don't).

The new station at the Köln Bonn Airport seen from the elevated street
next to Terminal 2 (at the northern end of the station) on 12 October 2003. The
glass roof is still under construction. Deep down in the station (18 m under
the surface) the tracks and platforms are visible. On the left side some stairs
are visible, leading into the ground next to the station. They serve as exit
for an emergency gangway which will cross under the roof in the middle of the
platform area. The area behind the streets in the background, where the
southern access to the station will be located, looks empty in this picture,
but some meters further left is the corner of the Terminal 1.

The station Köln/Bonn Airport seen on 13 June 2004, the first day of
regular service. This is the view from the southern access area into the
central part. The visible gangway above the tracks is just an access to the
emergency exits, but can also be used to change between the platforms. The
northern access area, which directly leads to Terminal 2, is hidden in the dark
background. On track 3 ICE 849 to Berlin Ostbahnhof is waiting for departure.

The station Köln/Bonn Airport seen on 13 June 2004, the first day of
regular service. This is the southern access area, with escalators (in front),
elevators (behind) and stairs (in the background) leading up to a level above
the tracks, but still under the ground. At the northern end of the station,
this level is the lowest floor of Terminal 2, here it is located under an empty
area next to Terminal 1. The way to Terminal 1 is not yet covered, one has to
walk through the free air (or the rain, depending on the weather).
